Sending hugs your way! You have to make a decision that is best for you and ONLY you. No one is more important than you are. Not too many people know that I am having surgery. Most won't know until AFTER the deed has been done, and even then it won't be to get anyone's opinion. Not to sound mean or anything, but you know what's best for you--no one's opinion matters except your own. I don't want a lot of people's opinion's and that's why I haven't told a lot of people. I am 52, and will be sleeved next Monday. I am thinking that will be the start of a whole new life for me. Good luck in whatever you decide!

I have come to the conclusion that many people are threatened when told you are going to be sleeved. They are used to you being one way and don't want it to change. My daughter has lost 50kg since being sleeved and one sister in law still has not acknowledged that she looks good!!

I'm 57 and was sleeved in October. The first week was hard, but now I think it is the best thing I could have done. I have more energy, can look down without squashing my double chin and feel great. I may be getting on, but there's a lot of life in me yet - probably a lot more now that I am sleeved. whatever you decide, make sure it is for the right reasons. Good luck!!

Wow, is there a lot of positive energy coming your way or what. This is the place to come for support.
I'm 58 years old and I want to live longer. One year ago I could hardly get out of the car and walk around the grocery store. Today we came home from a basketball game and stopped at 3 stores on the way home, just to look at things. I could not have done that a year ago. I want to see the world, and not from the window of the car as I drive by.
Last year I was taking 2 types of medicine for high blood pressure - today NONE. Yes, I take B12, Multi and Calcium, but I was taking 2 of those a year ago also.
Take care of yourself and make your own decision and come here for support. Please cheer up! Best of luck to you!

it is normal to have doubts, that is why people do not tell them about the surgery because of the negative reactions. I am 50 years old also and am having it done 1/23rd and I feel you owe it to yourself to do what you want to do and dont listen to anyone else

I'm sorry your friends and family are not supportive. When I decided to get this surgery (I am 5 days post op) I told my friends and family I was getting surgery but never revealed what type of surgery. It was quite hilarious to hear all the rumors spread and negative comments. I was accused of getting a nose job or a face lift or a boob job. After my surgery I revealed to them what I had done. They really never said anything after that. What could they say? It was already done. They had a lot of questions and I answered every one of them. I can honestly tell you for the first time in my life I feel free! I am no longer a prisoner to food to cravings or to the next miracle diet pill or diet gimmick. Remember this is YOUR body not your friend's or families. Chin up! This forum is a great place to look for POSITIVE support.

This thread is the reason I told no-one of my surgery. When asked "How did you lose so much?" I tell them smaller meals and moving around more---which is the truth. No one needs to know more. Good Luck Linda

Please keep in mind that most people out of the loop are just spewing old information. I've had a lot of people "worry for" me and when they tell me what they think, it's always some old crap from the first gastric bypass days. The others are either skinny already or in denial. :-) The sleeve is, in my opinion the best option and I've done a lot of research.

This is the time for you to become all you can be. If you let them sway you, you will be what they think you can be.

    *hugs*
    Janine

I know people who haven't had WLS that have had hair loss. One lady I know gets hair extensions. Another lady cut her hair short and magically, it looked like it had volume again.

I lost over 100 lbs. once and my hair changed -- went from thick and coarse to baby fine. A year later, I had so much hair -- too much hair -- but it has remained fine all these years (it's been over 20 years).

    Hi nancy3.
I certainly can't tell you what to do, only to give you some support. I too am 50... We'll 49, so I'm very close. I've done almost every diet and weight loss program out there. And yes, they all pretty much worked to help me lose weight. But every pound plus some always came back! I don't think I need to go into details as you likely been done the "diet" journies too. I too have some one who wants to keep questioning me as to why I feel this is needed, the dangers of surgery, you name it, I hear it.
I have made the decision that I can not spend the next 30 years or so doing what I've done the last 30 years or so!!
And, yes, since making my decision and scheduling my surgery, I have had some doubts. But then I look at myself (from inside to the outside) and I know I can not keep spending to much energy struggling w my weight! I feel this is the most stressful part of my life and I'm done with doing that!
The only thing I guess I can say is... This is your decision. Yes, you have loved ones in your life who care about you and they are concerned and scared for you. I would advise to have a stern conversation w them and tell them this is your decision, it has been decided and you are going through w it. It is your hope that even though they do not agree for whatever reason w your decision that they can find it in themselves to support it. I had this conversation, and for a little while, it was awkward w some of my family members, but it has gotten much better and most are more supportive, even though I am still occasionally remained that they don't agree. We've agreed that we will not see eye to eye, but that I'm not changing my mind. My surgery is scheduled for January 21.
I wish you you only the very best!
