Default Coming out of hiding :)

Hi! I've been lurking for a while and finally feel ready to join the fray. I'm three months away from surgery, making some good dietary changes, but still struggling. I worry about wanting to binge/handling emotional eating after being sleeved. All advice welcome.

I think we all worry about the same things. I have taken the approach that this isnt a quick fix and I still have to be responsible for making smart decisions and changing patterns. I think thats the only way that this becomes a true life change. I hope it goes well for you.. and btw GO MIZ-zou

Welcome! I'm so glad you've come out of hiding! When you get your sleeve done you will feel so empowered! There will still be struggles and choices to make but it seems so much more doable now! So from now till when you get your sleeve, stay focused on your goal. I believe the healthier you are going into your surgery the smoother your recovery is likely to be. I think yoga really helped me get healthy and I had an easier time post op than many of the accounts I've read. I started out trying out different protein shakes instead of one meal a day to find a few I liked. I recommend that too. Wishing you all the best!

Hi Barb....I can't say that the emotional eating will go away forever, but you can't hold but a few bites anyway....just do exactly what you are told by your doc and your nutritionist. You are going to be surprised at all the weight falling off of you. I'm over two years out now and I made the mistake of not moving more than the calories I put in. I did gain ten pounds back so be careful. I'm an emotional eater so I know your fears but just think of it as a lifelong journey, never a diet. You will be fine. Thanks for joining us, there are lots of great people on here with great advice, strong shoulders and loads of kindness. I've never felt rejected by any of them. We all have our trials, but at least we can all stick together! Good luck on your journey...we are here if you need us!

I still get the tendency to binge on occasion, and the further you get out the easier it is to let yourself slip. The main thing is to be aware, and catch yourself when it starts to happen. Everyone is going to have a slip from time to time, but it is up to you to stop it from getting out of control. During my weight loss I went through a period when I stopped tracking cals, carbs, etc. stopped paying attention to what I was eating, and thus I stopped losing. I never gained any weight back, but I was devastated when i realized that I really hadn't lost anything for about four months. When I realized this I took steps to get myself back on track. I immediately started the 5 day pouch test to jump start the weight loss, I went back to tracking EVERYTHING that I ate, and on days when I catch myself wanting to binge... I set alarms on my phone letting me know when I can eat...and I just don't eat until I hear that alarm. I am a year out and it is still hard, but doing small things like those can really help get you through a tough day. I can't tell you how many times I have literally sat there and counted down the minutes on a clock waiting for that alarm to sound...but hey, I didn't eat when didn't really need to, and that is what counts.
