Default Considering sleeve surgery but concerned about staples

Of all the things to be concerned about with this surgery, I'm worried about the staples. I'm allergic to all kinds of metals and have not worn a wedding ring since my son was born when complications with the morphene triggered all sorts of new allergies.

Is there any way to determine if you're allergic to the staples?

What happens when you put metal to your skin? I have not heard of staples causing severe allergic reactions. They are only in for 9 days (at least for me). The incisions itch but I keep them moist with neosporin to help with that. You could also call the surgeon and ask him about it.

If ur talking abt the staples in ur stomach, I would imagine that they r stainless or titanium. U should ask ur surgeon to make sure. Good luck 2 u

Mine are titanium, and I was told that my pouch would heal around and integrate them. It never occurred to me to worry about being allergic to them. The external staples were removed at my one week check up. I had no problem with them.

That is a little scary. I have only heard of titanium staples, and supposedly it is considered a non-allergenic metal. Supposedly - although there is some debate an allergy would be rare but not impossible? Ask your surgeon - & also tell him about your allergy to many types of metal. There is testing - I found this link. Titanium | MELISA Medica Foundation I think many surgeons will dismiss it & say it's impossible, but do your research - that may not be the case.

I have severe metal allergies also and I asked the surgeon as I was worried about them . he assured me that they were titanium and that there wouldn't be any problems . he asked if I had my tubes tied and I said yes he said then u already have staples inside you . I was very relieved at that point as I was quite worried about that!! best of luck to u!!!

I saw the YouTube video about staples because I was curious about them. It was very interesting. If you search VSG Q&A, Dr Guillermo Alvarez has quite a few videos that address topics I wanted to know about. Anyway, the staples are extremely tiny, and they are titanium, which is the only bio-compatible metal. They are applied with the same device that cuts the stomach. You stomach will eventually form scar tissue around them.

Talk to your doc about it. My partner, who is recently sleeved, has had bad reactions to ther staples and glues before but the titanium staples and glue used internally have been no problem at all for her.
All the best on your journey.

I had mine done in Tj and I asked dr Ortiz and co-surgeon dr morales and they said they are titanium. I would anticipate you being just fine but ask your surgeon.
