Physically the most difference appears to be how long it takes for you to be able to overeat again and dumping.
I had the sleeve, my twin nieces (very like me physically) had the lap band and the rny so we have a whole range to compare. We also all had them the same month.
I'd never have lap band. I'd go without first. I'm really sick but my niece with the "chunk of plastic" (her words) inside her is much sicker. It's so enmeshed in her organs by scar tissue they can't remove it, ever.
I don't regret the sleeve but I have a far larger stomach than my niece with rny at this point. She can still only eat 3/4 cup of food and I can down 2 cups which is a normal "mature" sleeve. She is still losing weight. I'm gaining with the smallest amount of carbs, even 60 a day. She also still has enough dumping to keep her off sugar. At this point, if I weren't so ill otherwise, I'd probably go get the rny because I have had carb issues lifelong and any tool that helps keep them away is good. So, if carbs or glucose intolerance are issues for you, you might wish to discuss your options more fully with your doc.

Ok, there are words above I did not type. What's with that? When I look at it to edit, I see what I typed but what I typed is not what is showing. It's not a change that makes much difference but it's still NOT what I typed.

And here I was so happy about being back.

    Grace,

I think it really depends on the person and surgeon too. I've talked to Bypassers who can easily do 2+ cups and sleeve people who are still limited years out. It really does depend on you and your eating habits and of course, how "big" the surgeon made the pouch/sleeve.

If I get the sleeve I 'm planning on asking for the smallest sleeve possible.

I did ask my surgeon what size bougie he uses. He told me it was 32F, which is pretty standard. I think I may have heard of 34F or 36F being used by other surgeons, not sure. I did read some studies that said that the weight loss results tend to be not so good when a surgeon uses 38F or 40F+, for obviously reasons. The "old" sleeves many, many years ago had bigger bougies and thus, not as good weight loss.

But you don't want it TOO tight!

I can pinpoint when my sleeve began to stretch, it was when I began to eat salads again...

I have a 36FR Bougie and I feel it is just perfectly sized! I'm very active, I need more than a few bites to keep my energy up although at this point I'm at a 22 BMI and if I gained, I might feel differently.

Hi I'm new here also but I'm having the bypass because I have diabetes and HBP and the weight comes off faster and it clears my diabetes quicker..Once they take 80 percent of your stomach that's it know replacing it.With the bypass if it doesn't work I can go with the sleeve. You have more weight to loose so the bypass might fit you better with a higher bmi .Really talk with your Doctor and Psycologist before making your decision and good luck.

I think you have it mixed up. Some people do sleeve to bypass revisions. Not the other way around.

If the RNY is reversible, couldn't they just do a sleeve off of a reversed RNY? I'm not saying that's what happens, just following the logic trail. I'm probably wrong.

I was diabetic, insulin dependent for about 6 years. I took 90 units nightly, and metformin daily (the highest dose allowed), and my AIC was always 9-10. I was off the insulin 5 days after surgery, and the metformin after 2 months. My numbers are great,AIC is 5-6! Oh by the way, I had the sleeve. It worked this way for many of my friends from support group, some even coming off an insulin pump. Good luck w/the decision.

I have a friend who's had the gastric bypass. She absolutely loves it. She had it about 3 years ago, as I recall. She's around food, loves to cook and eat -- and she's kept her weight off all this time. She says it changed her life.

However, I plan to have the sleeve. I have no medical diseases at all -- am very lucky. I do have skeletal issues -- arthritis, weak bone density in my hip, back pain, etc. Just need to get the weight off and keep it off.

What I'm saying is that I think this is a decision that has to be made by YOU, YOUR DOCTOR, and OTHER SPECIALISTS who are part of the medical team who are serving you. There are likely medical reasons why one might be better for some than others.

I'm also saying no one here is like you. You're pretty unique here, given your combination of young age and large size. I'd say give your medical team the information about you that they ask for and become partners with them in this important decision that will affect the rest of your life.

    Good luck to you.
    Ann
