Default What is the best way to track calories burned?

I have been looking at calorie burn tracking devices. I have looked at fitbits, bodymedia and polar heart rate monitors. IT is so confusing. I have read so many good and bad reviews. I'm not sure if I should just rely on my fitness pal to track or if it would help me to have a more accurate way of tracking. I do not plan on eating back any of my calories burned. I just want an accurate picture of my activity level and calories burned during a workout. Since my 2 most frequent exercise activities are yoga and pilates I thought that the flex fitbit probably wouldn't be best for me since it goes more off of steps taken. It does look cool. If I walked more and if it was compatible with my phone that would be my choice. Is it worthwhile to track calories burned? Do you? How do you keep track? Please share what you do or your thoughts about tracking those calories burned.

I don't track calories burned - actually I don't track intake either. I decided that I have plenty of knowledge about healthy eating, and about exercise, and I wasn't going to get stuck in the diet mindset of obsessively tracking calories in and out with this surgery. The surgery reduces your intake dramatically - if you eat within general guidelines you will lose weight. We should do exercise because it makes us healthy and fit, not because it makes us thin.

Anyway that's my soapbox. I do quite a lot of exercise. I run 2 or 3 times a week, I play netball weekly. I walk lots of places. I've just booked another skiing holiday. I have no idea how many calories I burn with each of those - but I know it's making me healthier and happier.

I bike so I use Map My Ride app on my phone. It keeps track of my distance and time. That's what I am really interested in.

Thanks Niamh! That was my attitude at first. I do try not to get too caught up in the number on the scale. I seem to be a really slow looser. I was 256 the day before surgery. I found tracking calories in is very comforting when the scale moves so slowly. I had something tangible to help me feel successful without seeing as much scale movement as I wanted. It also turned out I had been overestimating my protein intake so now I feel I have a more accurate picture. I wonder if seeing how many calories I have burned would help me not feel down and discouraged. I am worried I am overestimating my activity level. I'm just trying to figure out what will help me keep my spirits up. Perhaps I need to recommit to relaxing about the whole process. Thanks for sharing what has worked so well for you!

I love my Polar heart rate monitor. I feel like it more accurately tracks my calories burned during a workout. I DO find that myfitnesspal gives a close estimate to my heart rate monitor though.

Thank you Chelsea! I do find it reassuring that those agree. I had been reading that mfp overestimated. Do you find wearing a heart rate monitor motivates you?

Yes, when I workout I can give myself a calorie goal and I love watching it go up. I also like to see how my heart rate changes as I push myself. It gives you a "burn" range where you wanna stay in, and then at the end of a workout you'll get a summary of how many minutes you were in the zone and out of the zone. Most of my minutes out of the zone is when it's above the zone from pushing really hard!

I have the zip , fitbit and yes your right this one is picky and only counts steps, but I love it, it keeps me motivated as you can have friends and see how many steps they are taking etc. really motivates me ! As far as rest of activities I use mfp to track or see how many calories I've burned. Also fitbit can inter grate with your mfp and gives your daily calories burned right on the mfp app

My brother and his wife both have FitBits and happen to love them, when they used them. Buy BodyMedia Armband Packages: Start Losing Weight They are no longer using them because he didn't want to pay the $7/month maintenance fee after their 6 months free was up. Silly, cause he paid $120 per unit, which equals to $20/unit per month for the 6 months they used them!

    Some people...

My husband and I have the Nike Fuelbands. We love the. They will tell you calories burned, steps taken, where you are with your nike fuel (which is your goal for the day)..& it's a watch. I always have mine set to the time feature and then I scroll through my other stuff when no one is around. We leave ours on all the time (except while in water).. My husband did wear his to the beach a few times and thankfully nothing happened..as well as in the shower a bit. He constantly says he forgets all about it. It will store your results online or you can download the app to your phone and see how you have done (including looking at past weeks and months).

What did the Nike Fuelband cost and is there a monthly fee that comes with using it?

I was told not to even worry about tracking calories yet but its so hard. I have trained myself for the last 2 years to track everything I put in my mouth and every activity and calorie burned. I do have a polar watch with chest strap and I love it but I'm thinking of looking into the Nike fuel band because I want my steps tracked also. My polar only tracks my heart rate and calories burned and it also doesn't store it and let me upload it anywhere for reviewing later like the fuel band does.

I am using Lose It. It is a free app. on my kindle. I am tracking everything I eat. They have so many foods listed as well as restaurants and supermarket foods. I have yet to eat something that was not found in Lose It. It tracks, proteins, sodium, fats, carbs, and so on. I can also list my exercise. It tells me exactly how many calories are burned, in how much time. For example I swim laps. It is very specific. You tell it what type of swim stroke you are doing and for how long and it will tell you how many calories. I am averaging 1 hour of backstrokes a day which is 881 calories. I am taking in about 500-600 calories a day. It tells me my net loss of calories. Now that I know it takes 3500 calories to lose 1 pound, I no longer sweat the days I don't lose a pound. It takes me three days or so just to lose 1 pound. I am staying right on schedule. As long as it's a loss it's going right.

Great question reading mom, I've been meaning to look into something like this too. We have to keep track of our intake and calories burned. I feel it will help keep me motivated and on track to hopefully never put that weight back on!
