I think this is terrible! Weight Loss Surgery, regardless of which one you choose, should be a PERSONAL CHOICE! They are doing this to a child that does not understand and is no where near old enough to make that type of decision on something that will effect the rest of his/her life! Terrible decision on the parent's part!
What I don't understand is if they didn't know whether or not the parents were sticking to the diet, why they didn't admit him as an inpatient for a while and see what happened when his diet was controlled. If a parent IS overfeeding/misfeeding a child to the point they can get this overweight, this is a potential child protection issue. If it's a medical endocrinological problem, then investigate it properly in hospital to ensure that there is proper rationale for the surgery. If the parents were unable to provide proper nutritional input for their child when he was obese, they may now be starving him of nutrients by not carefully managing the food he does get.
Anyway, it's a news story and we don't know much about it. But still .... scarey scarey stuff.
I don't even know what to say....What the hell did his parents do to him? A 2 year old doesn't feed himself or choose his food...I wonder if he has a metabolic problem that wasn't detected...OMG What kind of doctor would perform this on a 2 year old. I'm flabbergasted...
I think it's safe to say that this child isn't just being overfed...he clearly has a metabolic issue or some other issue at hand rather than just his parents are feeding him, although I'm sure that's part of the problem too. What if he's a Prader Willi child (genetic disorder, people NEVER feel full, as in they will eat until their stomachs actually burst if you let them) and the parents don't know how to deal with that? What if there is some other underlying issue that a VSG would not really solve?
He's just so young. I worry about the effects on him as he grows. I guess that's what I'm most concerned about.
I just feel so, so bad for him. Sleep apnea at 2....oh gosh, I can't even imagine. That poor baby.
I think you have to reserve judgement until all the facts are known. I agree with Katherine. It could be Prader Willi where you never feel full. I know how much I love my kids, and if the part of their stomach that controls hunger had to be taken out to save them from bursting their stomach if left to their own devices, I would do it. It may have been a question of life and death. My child could not stop eating drywall when she was 1.5 yr. old. There are nibble marks ALL over my house. I could not monitor her every minute. I still tried to give her a well balanced diet- but she just really wanted to eat drywall and fruit. Eventually she grew out of it- but it scared me. I can't imagine my baby weighing that much- what if it was out of their control? You just never know what people are dealing with.
I was a heavy child, then was anorexic/bullemic in middle school, early high school. weight "issues" in high school/college (ie I would gain 10 lbs and be nuts), and progressively heavier as I got older. So I have empathy for lifelong weight issues.
I also cant help but think there are more parental issues. As I tell my kids, just because you CAN have kids doesn't mean you ever should. Kaiser is making me do 6 months of classes to have surgery. If only people were required to do this before they had kids.
