    Default Osteoarthritis

I have osteoarthritis. Had total hip replacement four years ago at age 50 and now the other hip is crashing. I'm really hoping weight loss will buy me some time before I have to have another replacement. I have other joints affected as well (ankles, feet). Do any of you veteran sleevers have osteoarthritis, and did your weight loss improve your situation? Also, my Dr. says I can continue to use anti-inflammatory med and nsaids following surgery. Any of you still taking either/both of these? Complications?

My first bone scan showed osteopenia. After lifting weights in a Body Pump class for a year, my results were normal! You can't imagine how much better you will feel if you will lift weights. Your stamina is through the roof! I'm twelve years older than you, too.

Melissa, I am currently 52 and had both knees replaced and one hip replaced two times while in my 40s. I have one ankle that is bone on bone and I can honestly say that the pain in that joint has lessoned since I've lost weight and I will be able to hold off on getting it replaced for a while longer. The weight loss will definitely help your pain level.

I also took Celebrex prior to surgery and had to go off of it two weeks before surgery and allowed to go back on it one month later. There are many advocates of not taking anti-inflammatories after the sleeve but honestly, if you aren't having trouble taking them pre-sleeve, you shouldn't have a problem taking them after. Getting the sleeve is one of the best things I've ever done for myself in more ways than one. Good luck with your upcoming surgery!

One of the reasons I did this was because of my severely degenerated back. No luck as of yet, but may change in time. My doctor as with others on this site, have said no anti inflamatories like ibuprofen again. Something to do with stomach and potential bleeding.

Hi Karen. Thank you for the encouraging response. My doctor feels the sleeve is the best wls procedure for anyone needing nsaids/anti-inflammatories. He said it is the least like procedure of the 3 to cause stomach trouble. I am curious abt your ankle issue.....my ankles are also in a bad shape. Are you anticipating surgery on your ankle? Do you mind sharing info on what that procedure is and what they do? Hoping ankle surgery is far off but feel is it likely eventually. Right now they are injecting both ankles w/ steroids but the steroids make me so crazy that I'd rather hurt and limp. Sure hoping my weight loss will buy me time w/ that as well. Also curious why the did one of your hips twice???

Ankle replacement surgery is along the same lines as a knee or hip replacement. They remove the diseased part of the bone and replace it with metal. You can google ankle replacement to get more detail. It can be difficult to find a good surgeon but they are out there. I've done a lot of research and found a few within ~100 miles of me and have consulted with a few. The most recent surgeon I saw is up in Baltimore and he advised me to wait as long as I can for this replacement since the pain level has gone down with the weight loss. While a knee or hip replacement is expected to last about 30 years, an ankle replacement is expected to last only 10-15 years. I've had other surgeons ask how soon I wanted the surgery and I tend to back away from those too eager to operate. I've had 20 operations so I am NOT in a hurry to rush into the operating room until it's absolutely necessary. Whatever you do, do NOT let a surgeon talk you into fusion of your ankle. That is so archaic and if that is the recommendation, then I believe the Dr. is way behind current times. Here is a list of top ankle/foot surgeons in the country. I've seen many of these names over and over through my research over the last several years. You wouldn't want to have this type of surgery with the Dr. up the road in my opinion. http://www.tcomn.com/Portals/10/Docu...Week052212.pdf

I had the first knee replaced in 2007, the second in 2008, my hip in 2009 when I got a defective hip prosthesis that had to be replaced again in 2010 because of extreme pain that was worse than before the replacement. This was not my surgeon's fault but the manufacturer's. I think the weight loss will buy you some time.

I am only 12 days post op - 35 pounds down from my all time high ... my arthritic knees can tell the difference as can my back. I still have issues but can already tell a difference - cant wait to lose more...if this much weight loss helps, imagine what a 100 pound difference will make. Good luck - you will find its worth it.

    Hello,
The nutritionist has advised that my osteopenia would become full-blown osteoporosis after a bypass. Is it the same with the sleeve?
    Thx

Hi ladies, I am just 53 years old and have had a bilateral TKR (both knees replaced at the same time), a double patellar reconstruction, and my left knee has been replaced again and is having major problems AGAIN (they are calling it "clunking", very painful). Now my osteoarthritis has attacked my back and I need a tri-fusion to provide some relief in my whole lower back and legs. So, I'm on quite a bit of pain meds in addition to anti-inflammatory and nerve medications. I'm 5'9" and 325 pounds and am scheduled for a week from today to get a sleeve. Anyone out there have a similar situation and what did your docs do about the pain management? I'm quite nervous about it.

I have osteoarthritis in both knees and my lower spiine. I stopped taking NSAIDs after my surgery. I have lost 86 lbs, although I feel slight discomfort in my right knee from time to time I have not used any kind of pain killer since about 8 weeks post op from the sleeve surgery. Amazing is the word I use to describe how I feel now. Best of luck to you too.

Thank you so much Blackbry63, that does encourage me. What did you do for exercise when you first started? I'm in so much pain most of the time but I need to exercise some way that won't put me down. Any brainy ideas? Congratulations on your weight loss by the way.

Knee and back issues here. I haven't used Celebrex or any NSAIDs since before surgery. Knees have been great, back has been much better than before.
