Exclamation I'm scared that the surgery didn't work on me :/ help?

    Hi!

I am 6 days post op and I feel good; I can walk, sit down and get up without any problems. I am currently on a strict clear liquids only diet and will continue to be on that diet for the next for days before I change to normal/heavy liquids and soft drink. I am sick of all the fruit juice, ugh

The reason why I'm worried about the surgery not working on me is because I feel some sort of hunger, the procedure was supposed to remove the hunger hormone filled part of your stomach. At first it felt like gases but now it only goes away if I drink a little bit. It's not like the hunger I felt before, but after I start feeling it and drink it goes away. Am I really hungry or is it just gases?

Also, how much weight do you lose within the first week? When my dad did the surgery he lost a lot of weight. My weight seems to slowly declining. I know I should wait, but I'm scared of not losing that much and that frustrates me.

So far I lost about 13 lbs

I would appreciate some tips and comments

    Thank you

I'm hoping it is just a paranoia of some sort because I feel the same way... my surgery was on the 28th and I AM HUNGRY! I need to eat something filling. It just makes it easier not to cheat because I know I risk damage to my stomache. My doctor has had me on FULL liquids since the day I left the hospital which by reading everyones posts is not the norm. I guess he just does things a bit different? I feel really bad for him when I go for my 2 week post op appt because I have alot of questions. Other than the hunger though, I feel great. And I think 13 lbs is an awesome loss!

At 6 days out your body is still doing lots of healing and changing. What you have today will not be the same as you experience in 3 weeks from now. It sounds like you have had a remarkable surgery and recovery period, so for that I would be grateful! Just continue to follow your dr's instructions and you will have success.

Men loose weight at a different rate than women do, and each person looses weight at different rates. I know its hard, but try to not compare your weight loss with anyone elses. This is your journey.

You'll do just fine, don't worry. First of all, don't relate your weight loss to someone else. Every "body" is different and so is how you over come surgery. Second, don't be a slave to the numbers on the scale. At this point you know what you need to do for long term success... eat healthy, exercise, watch out for slider foods, etc. Give your new stomach time to adjust.

If you are on clear liquids you are probably hungry. It will get better when you can have full liquid options like greek yogurt and pudding made with protein powder. Hang in there!

I was 9 days post op and only lost 11 lbs. I was so frustrated as there was a guy in the office who had his surgery the same day as me and he had lost 17 lbs. I wanted to scream. Anyway everyone tells me that men poop 10 lbs. lol. I am now 35 days and down 24 lbs. it's coming off slowly but coming off. The way I look at it is if I lose only 2 lbs a week 6 months from now I'll be down another 52 lbs. not bad. Be patient and stay committed. Any loss is a good loss

For whatever it is worth I am 3 weeks out and I am still getting. At first it was kind of worrisome to me, but the worry fades when you realize how little you are eating day in and day out.

This is something I always bring up when I see these posts. Are you taking an acid reducer? If not, the acid can feel like hunger. Try taking an acid reducer and see what happens. I take 1 in the am and 1 in the pm. This really does help. Good luck on your journey!

since you are so new to the sleeved side, welcome! and also- it's in your head we have all felt that way. give it a few weeks once you're healed up and add more protein, it'll be like your appetite is on a vacation..
If I can do it at 19, you can do it at 90

You're not hungry, its acid. That's why when you take a sip of something even water that feeling goes away. My doctor gave me a prescription for aciphex, what a difference. You can take something over the counter also like Kelli suggested!

    Best Wishes,

    Does the Acid go away?
My doctor did subscribe me some acid capsules which I only take once a day. They don't seem to be working apparently.

You probably need to change acid reducers. Not all work the same on each person. Talk to your doctor and see what else he would suggest. For me it is Zantac. I buy the Sam's brand.

I woke up from surgery hungry. Im a year out and I had hunger pains from the beginning. The difference is that now I'm full after a few bites. I've lost 164 pounds in a year so trust me having hunger pains is ok it doesn't mean you are going to fail. The difference for me after surgery has been that my head hunger is almost non existent. So even though I get hungry and my stomach growls I don't have that horrible urge to eat and eat and eat some more! A few bites and I'm good,

So soon after surgery there are many different types of tummy pain that made me wonder if it was hunger; gassy, achey-probably from the surgery itself, acidy-forgot to take prilosec, etc. etc. It takes a while to really discern what is hunger, pain, gas, etc. I too felt what I am sure was true hunger for about 4 weeks after surgery. I was SO disappointed that my hunger did not go away like my husband's did (he had the sleeve too and never felt hunger!)

It will take a while for you to figure out what you are really feeling. For me the #1 reason for getting the surgery was the reduction of the stomach size itself-even if I still felt hunger I would be happy with the smaller stomach as it gave me a new physical tool I could work with to limit the amount I ate. I can understand how you are feeling but I think you are too early to be worried that your surgery didn't work. We are all pretty good at trying a new "diet" and then giving up when it doesn't work right away...since this isn't a diet you might have to adjust your expectation and trust the surgery itself and take the time to learn to trust your new tummy!

    Best wishes!!
