Default One month out, trying new foods. Throwing up most of them. UGGGGGG.

Ok, not sure if this is normal, and i just emailed my dr. but i literally throw up 80% of any new foods I try. It sucks! and im worried about my sleeve as im throwing up like 3-4 times a day. Once the food hits my stomach it feels HORRIBLE. and i make myself throw up almost immediately. the only things i can tolerate ok are still soups, cottage cheese and my protein drinks. Im going to stick to those for a while longer I guess, but i keep feeling excited to keep trying. Help! anyone?

How are you making yourself throw up? That is also so hard on your stomach. What kind of things are you trying? Hope your feeling ok other than you stomach issues.

I gag myself to puke. it happens quickly in usually in one big swoop. like last night i has some romaine, black beans, corn, avocado salad with small pieces of grilled chicken and fat free dressing. like 3 bites. it sat like a brick and i was like, no way. this hurts. its like unless tummy is empty or just liquids its mad.

I have been on regular/soft food starting 2 weeks now. It seems like most of the new things I try are either unappealing or my new tummy doesn't care for them. I take a few bites and wait a little to see the reaction. If it is bad, I stop eating that item, if not I continue. My tastes have changed in such weird ways. Last night, I grilled a ribeye and sliced a small portion from it my own dinner. I was craving steak, but when I began eating, my tummy rebelled. I think it is going to take a while to learn my new parameters.

I get the slimys frequently, from different things but I am pretty sure making yourself vomit is not a good thing.

I would recommend trying one new food at a time - that way you can single out which one doesn't agree with you. Lettuce and corn are both harder to digest items. Like Holly said, take a few small bites and then wait and see - if it is ok keep eating if not quit. Remember to try these foods again in a few weeks, sometimes that is all it takes. I couldn't handle lettuce at first and now I am ok. I have also found that taking Prilosec and/or eating some Tums when something upsets my stomach makes it feel better.

    Hi NYC,

I am 10 months out from surgery and have lost 80 pounds, and don't generally respond to many posts anymore, but you got my attention. FROM EXPERIENCE, I encourage you to STOP sticking your fingers down your throat to throw up. I was doing the same thing. The choice was having a brick in my stomach causing extreme distress that would last hours, or getting rid of the pain immediately by throwing up. Easy answer. Puke. The problem is that throwing up becomes very easy, it solves the problem (we feel better instantly) and it creates "feel good" chemicals in our bodies (everyone feels better after they throw up) and it sounds bizarre, but vomiting sort of becomes something to look forward to. It's how eating disorders get started. The answer is to STOP OVER EATING. Anticipate that you stomach can't tolerate certain foods or certain quantities, and decide in advance to not eat them. If the only thing you can tolerate is soup, then you should only be eating soup. When you're ready to try cheese, take the tiniest piece... and stop. See how you do. A psychologist friend of mine who specialists in eating disorders explained to me what I was doing and why it was so unhealthy, and I was able to stop. Before she spoke to me, I had no idea that my habits were dangerous. Good luck.

I'm eating soft foods at this stage, but do find that after a few bites I am done. If I eat something that isn't as soft as my tummy is used to (or I didn't chew it up enough) I find that it does sit like a brick in my tummy and its makes me uncomfortable. The best thing I have found is to take a walk. Standing up straight and moving for about 30-45 minutes seems to help move the food the right direction and I feel so much better afterwards. I HATE throwing up and I probably could have taken that route a couple of times, but the walking helped move the food instead. Not that anyone likes to throw up, but I mean I really have a thing about throwing up so I will do anything to avoid it!
Like shortnsweet24 said, try one new thing at a time and see how you feel. Make sure you are chewing each bite at least 20 times before swallowing and eat slowly. I find things like chicken need even more chewing than that before I swallow. And it really may only take a couple of bites to fill you up at this point. I forget to slow down sometimes because the food tastes good so I want more and that's usually when I end up out on a walk afterwards!
I think talking to your doctor is also a good idea. Maybe you need a Prilosec or something daily. My doctor has me on 1 pill 2 times a day for the first 3 months after surgery. And I didn't suffer from heartburn or reflux before surgery. I guess its precautionary because sleevers are more prone to heartburn and reflux.
    Hope you figure it out!

I think maybe you're eating too much/too fast? Are you measuring your foods? I don't measure sometimes and that's when I over-do it. Also, I'm six weeks post op and I just got cleared to have salads and raw veggies. Maybe it's too soon for the salad? I know that I have seen a major difference over the past two weeks in regards to what I can tolerate and the amount of food that I can eat. Luckily, I have had no problems...but, I'm fanatical about measuring. The one time I threw up was because I ate too much too fast. I agree that you shouldn't force yourself to be sick. The couple of times that I have gotten over-stuffed, I took a walk around my house and about 15 minutes later the uncomfortable feeling subsided. You may only be creating a hard habit to break.

At one month out I was still eating soup, cottage cheese, watermelon, refried beans and soft cheese. I think you may be getting in too big of hurry to try new foods. Slow down and just stick with the foods you know you can handle.

I think you are creating a self-fullfulling cycle by inducing vomiting 3-4 times per day. Your stomach is not fully healed and you are adding even more stress to it by forcing yourself to throw up. Your stomach needs to figure out how to digest food again, and you are not letting it learn that. Plus, I think you are rushing the types of food you are trying to eat. At one month, I was on puree transitioning to soft. Lettuce is a very difficult food to digest (even now).

Even if your doctor had given you the go-ahead to eat regular food, your stomach sounds like it isn't ready for it. Remember, the doctor's food guidelines are not set in stone. They are derived from averages from his patients. You might be one of those that don't fall into your surgeon's statistic average.

Please, stop inducing yourself to vomit.

I was never schooled on measuring. maybe 3 bites is too much for me. interesting about just being cleared for salads. I figured it was an easy thing as its mostly water. Its hard to know what is going to hurt, but most does, its totally starting to be like oh yea, this is gonna be a puking session. AGAIN. During my pre-op diet when I worked, i had to just chew and spit (much to the humor of my kitchen guys), but it worked. I think its true that my individual tummy is just not ready for regular foods. Ill go another week then try again. I dont mind so much the juicing and protein drinks, it doesnt feel bad overall, in actuality, i feel pretty darn good. its just that im ready to get on with it! I miss my salads badly. But in time I suppose. thanks alot for the help. Can those that measure tell me the amount they measure?

Now, obviously, you won't be eating Pork in Adobo Sauce yet, but you can see that my plate is a regular side plate. The best thing for you to do is to get small bowls/plates to use. That way you don't have to measure in the traditional sense, but "measure" by how much is in your small bowl or plate. I use a ramekin as a bowl.

You, working in a restaurant, will have access to small bowls and plates, too. Use those as your guide so it is easier for you as you work.
