Default How I discovered the mystery to my eating disorder!

Almost two weeks out of surgery & feeling fantastic. So many people have asked why I took such drastic measures to reduce my weight. Before surgery, I wondered why I had no self-control; why was I such a failure at keeping the unhealthy pounds off? Yes, I have lost the same 40-50 pounds, so many times, I've lost count. Yo-yo dieting is extremely dangerous, yet I always became disgusted with my disfigured body and would, again, seek out the newest diet.

Since being sleeved, I discovered the mystery to my eating disorder. Never, ever in my entire life did I push a plate away, due to fullness. In fact, I NEVER felt full; my body failed to respond to food intake. By the time I would put down the fork, either there was no food left to be devoured or my entire body was wracked in pain from stuffing it to the gills. I always thought that the plate-pushers were putting on a show, just for me..."Look Fatty, I'm already full and will not make a pig of myself, like you!"

Today, I am a plate-pusher and it is not a show for anyone. After only a few sips or bites, I get a certain sensation, under my breastbone. It is only mildly uncomfortable but enough so, to make me stop eating and PUSH THE PLATE AWAY! Boy was I shocked when I explained this to my hubby. He looked at me very oddly and said that he felt that way, every time he ate. When I confronted other "normal" weight people, they gave me the same response.

So, instead of all the psychological hoop-jumping pre-op patients must endure, there is only one question they need to be asked...Do you push your plate away when you feel full? If that person looks dazed and confused by the question, approve their surgery, immediately!

I couldn't agree with you more! I feel the exact same way. I now just wonder to myself, so this how normal ppl feel when eating. huh? Who knew? I am amazed at how little I eat & my new relationship with food. And... more importantly, that I stay full & satisfied longer. Even if I ate a HUGE meal, I would be snacking an hour later. Now, I eat dinner & stay full until I wake up in the morning. It's such an odd change in my life. YAHAY FOR US!

Exactly!!! I never understood the "full" feeling either. What is that? I was either hungry, or painfully uncomfprtable from eating too much but NEVER did I feel full or saciated. I now have that feeling too... and can push a plate away and do. It is amazing!

I can't wait. Sounds great to be actually full and satisfied without eating a 3 course meal. My psych said to look up how much a stomach can hold. I was utterly shocked to see it can hold up to 4 quarts! so no wonder some of just never feel full. Looking forward to quality, not quantity
Thanks for sharing like you do, I'll do the same when I get sleeved.

How strange is this? I just asked my husband last night if it seems weird to see me push my plate away. I commented that it seems really strange to feel full because I use to just sit there and eat and nibble til everything left on the table was gone.

It's so comforting to know that you're not alone, however...It's even better knowing that we found the solution...Push that plate away, yay!

You are so right! This is the only time that I've ever had to push a plate away. I would do the same thing as you by eating until I was stuffed and then even go back in a little while and eat some more. It feels good to actually get full! Now when I look at what my husband and son eats I wonder how I stuffed all that and more into my stomach. It feels liberating not to feel hungry all the time! Good luck on your journey!
