I see a lot of people on here that go to Mexico for their sleeve surgery. Why? Cheaper? What do you do for follow up appointments in the US?
I went to Mexico because it was cheaper. My insurance would not cover it in the states b/c my BMI was 33 and I had no comobilities, yet! My experience was better than any hospital /surgical experience I have ever had in the states. I did my research and chose the best (Dr. Valenzuela). These physicians there are far more experienced at bariatric surgeries than most you will find in the states. Mine did, on average, 10 surgeries/week. She did a fantastic job and I have had zero complications. I will be doing all my follow-up care with my pcp in the states. I have no regrets and would recommend it to anyone.
I went to Mexico because the wait list for surgery here was very long (2-3 years) assuming I would even qualify as I didn't have any co-morbidities for my BMI. The private clinics were out east (so I still would have had to travel) and they started at $20,000. Travelling to the States scared me more than Mexico.
Follow-up care hasn't been an issue as there really isn't much follow-up care other than a periodic blood test to check your vitamin/mineral levels. I also get a prescription from him for a year's worth of B12 shots.
I chose Mexico because my insurance wouldn't cover it. Plus, if I chose a self pay option here in Denver, that would've been a minimum of $17,500!! I paid $4650 for mine through A Lighter Me. I was treated like royalty from day one (and I went by myself). Everyone I met made me feel welcomed, safe and secure. It was like a mini vacation too! I would do it again in a heartbeat. No regrets at all. And I've had no complications, so I haven't had to do a "follow up" with my regular doctor yet. I'll probably see her next spring for an annual check up.
