    Default Mortality rate?

Well being a mother of 3 I wonder about the mortality rate of doing this surgery.....The doctors I have looked into state they have not had any deaths...how do we know for sure? Thoughts? I also think the more surgeries they have done the better..the more confidence I will have in them..

I too had the same concerns and was told the same that there was a non existent mortality rate. I just had to pray and do what I felt was best. There is always a risk with any surgical procedure and I even wrote an "if I don't make it letter" to my family. The sleeve is a popular procedure look at all the post op people on this forum---- we're alive best of luck on your journey my dear.

I too am concerned. My surgery is in August. My doctor said he had heard of only one death, but not with his group. And like Maia0628 said and i agree there is a risk to everything in life. We can walk outside and get hit by a car. But i am so scared too. Everyday i think of this surgery and wonder if i am doing the right thing. Its in GOD'S hands. Wow Maia you actually wrote a letter? i think i would have cried if i did that. But you are right again! How are you feeling?

All surgery carries risk. that being said, i have had many surgeries and this was one of the easiest with regards to pain and complications. You have to do everything your surgeon tells you to do. When i did my surgery i was told to get up and walk several times a day. i did not want to do it but i did it anyway. i was surprised to see nobody else walking around. I felt great within 24 hours of having the surgery. Follow the rules (there's not that many) and you will do just fine. if you are in relatively good health going in you will not have complications. good luck to you!

All surgerys have risks as you know but this was one of my concerns as well,my particular doctor has done thousands of procedures and he said he's never had any horror story's and I confirmed that with much research . The reason I decided to do it is my health risks from being fat outweighed the risks of surgery by a ton.

you can read studies that show anywhere from below 1% to 2% mortality. The other question to ask is the number of complications or those requiring follow up surgeries. My doctor had no deaths and only 2 complications with only 1 requiring follow up surgery to repair a tear in the sleeve, he wouldn't say if this was due to surgical error or because the person ate solid food to early.

What made me feel comfortable was asking these types of questions and when my doctor gave me honest answers and showed me his and the results of colleagues that he learned the procedure from I felt reassured and comfortable that I was working with the right surgeon.

I haven't had any complications or problems I am happy to say.

I was very worried as well, but I asked my surgeon and he was very open with me, he said he has lost one patient and it was from blood clots in the legs bc she did not walk at all after surgery. Just do what your doctors tell you and you will be OK!!!

Follow the surgeon's orders. Whether you want to or not! Follow the dietary program and ask questions. Follow your surgeon's at home guidelines. (The only stupid question is the one that is not asked!) If you have a question, write it down. Ask here, ask your doctor. Keep your primary care doctor informed of what's going on with you, so he/she can answer questions as well. Do lots of research until you feel you are no longer worried about mortality rates. It's best to go in to any surgery: well-informed, relaxed, and with a positive outlook. You will do fine. Best wishes to you...

My surgeon addressed this also....in his long history....28 years...he did bypasses before this, he has only lost one patient and that was not a sleeve.

One guy I know who had the sleeve had a major heart attack on the table.....But he would have had that anyway...the doc was able to save him.

There are risks and I'm sure some will enjoy giving out scary stats...that's why it's so important to research every single doctor that you are considering.

Guess I wasn't worried, never thought to ask my doctor!!! With any surgery with anesthesia there is always a risk. I've had several so maybe that's why I wasn't concerned.

I had a friend who was in tears because she was afraid I would die...I was not!
With any surgery.. when you have a Dr you trust you have to belive God will guide his hands and do not fear you might die.

My PCP Dr said this surgery saved my life.
I am off all diabetic medication (AM & PM insulin shots and 3 daily pills)
I am feeling better that I ever thought I could.
Weigh the pros and cons, make a educated decision, and believe God will do the rest.
