for the past few days I been feeling really weak. Has anyone else had this before? I'm really feeling horrible
That is exactly how I felt. You are not getting enough hydration. I'm struggling oh so hard to hit that 64oz mark and I'm getting better about it, but man I feel like hammered poop! Dizzy, I can't stand being out in the heat more than 5 minutes without wanting to retch, exhausted all the time. This may be a bit TMI, but use your urine output as a gauge. How often are you peeing? What color is it? If you are dehydrated, it will get darker and darker. This is a sign that your kidneys are working overtime to detox your blood. Without enough water, this can lead to kidney failure. Other signs are if your tongue is swollen and/or has a white coating on it, or if your skin seems to lose its elasticity. To me, the urine issue is a much bigger deal than what color my tongue is. We've just been through a major surgery and our bodies are expending an incredible amount of energy to heal and keep out infections and things like that. The last thing you want to do is make your kidneys work harder than necessary.
My Dr. told me (and I've seen this written in several places online) that getting enough protein at this early stage is not nearly as important as staying hydrated.
I found a whey-based protein at my local yuppie organic store. I honestly don't mind it. Its 18g of protein and only 3g of fat/carbs. There's a lot of different kinds out there, so sometimes it is just a matter of finding one you can tolerate. I haven't really been all that adventuresome because I didn't mind the whey mix I have. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
My dr said i could use any protein powder, as long as it was whey isolate and had as little sugar as possible. The one i found has 24g of protein per scoop, and i add it to 8oz of fat-free lactaid and a pouch of carnation instant breakfast. U can also add a container of lite yogurt to it. I add a few ice cubes. 2 of those a day will give you close to 60g of protein. good luck.
Interesting, bostonstopangel. There's tons of protein powders on the market, and a LOT of them are geared for body-builders/gym rats. Those are often too high in fat/carb for bariatric use. The guideline I was given by my Dr. was it had to contain at least 15g protein but no more than 5g each of fat/carb. Believe me, its not as easy to find that as you'd think. At my local yuppie organic store, there's a whole wall of protein powders, but only 2 of them were legal for me.
I ended up finding a deal at gnc. My Dr said i needed to find one with as little sugar as possible. So the one i got was gnc performance 100% whey protein 24g protein per scoop with 130 calories, 1g sugar, 4 carbs, 2g fat. Normally they go for $28 for a1 lb bag, but like i said, i found a deal. I got 2/$30 and they had unflavored, which is what i wanted.
That is a REALLY good deal! I always cringe when I see the price on my protein at the store, but then I remind myself that the Mr and I have easily spent that much (and more) at one restaurant eating food that was probably not the best thing for either of us. I'm 2 weeks post op as of today, and I think its just now sinking into the Mr's brain that he really has no choice but to go along this mad journey with me! Gone are days of my famous meals full of rich, yummy goodness! He could stand to lose some weight too, so it won't kill him. LOL
Well, congrats to u on ur 2 weeks. U should be close to going to ur next stage then, if u haven't already. I'll be 3 weeks out on wednesday and my dr put me to soft foods a week ago today. Talk about a big adjustment. Lol. And u can still cook yummy foods, u just have to work out a more healthy way to prepare it. Thankfully, my fiance likes to cook too. His fav meal is fried chicken with mashed potatoes or rice and gravy. I would still have to help him tho. Haven't had to cross that bridge yet. Good luck
I wasn't feeling so much weak as just really tired . I was only getting in about 300-350 calories in a day x 2 weeks...no wonder. Upped calories...added almond butter to shakes plus 1/2 banana. I already feel much better. I knew my water levels were good- hard to eat sometimes when you just aren't hungry.
