I apologize for terrifying anyone but what I said was true for me. My doctor tried to put the fear of God in me to make me think if this was REALLY the right decision or not. Im sure you will do great and be fine but I think ANYONE doing this surgery should know this risks involved and thats all. Being informed is being empowered. Im a little shocked that people don't know all the details about a surgery like this.Kitreena, you have succeeded in terrifying me! Surgery date in 2 weeks.
Good thing your surgeon wasn't mine. Anyone trying to put the fear of god into an atheist would have got laughed at. lolMy doctor tried to put the fear of God in me
I think there is a pretty, giant line between making an informed decision and scare tactics. People going on about "HOW YOU MIGHT DIE!!!!!!!" is scare tactics.
A gastric sleeve surgery is an elective surgery, thankfully. Because of that, I was able to get this surgery. As should anyone else, regardless if their reasons seem trivial to me.
Any surgery has risks. Any facility has failures. That's statistics.
The hard part about this surgery is that unfortunately you really don't get to select how much weight your body will lose! If you already have a high/normal metabolism (you can check with your physician to find out)...you could want to lose 20-30 but your body could continue drop weight once it's hit that mark! I promise you I'm not judging or on any wls high horse...just please don't devalue the recommendation of you doctor. You can't reverse this surgery once its done and unfortunately not all doctors will care about your quality of life and health. Good luck and please feel free to reach out to me privately if what I said needs additional clarification.....
If you've been yo yo dieting your entire life, I highly doubt you have posted your highest weight. What is the HIGHEST weight you've ever been? I bet it's higher than 160.
I highly recommend getting the sleeve if you can at a lower BMI. You are lighter, your recovery will be quicker, and you won't have to worry yourself to death when you slip off the next yo yo diet. If you keep yo yo dieting, you usually end up heavier the next time your diet ends. And then in 5 years you will be over 200 lbs.
Good for you. Get the surgery. Prevention is the best medicine. Hope to hear about your journey in June! Best wishes!
If I was still 170 to 160 pounds I would not go through with the sleeve surgery, I am happy I did it as it put my diabetes in remission but it has to been easy for me. I cringe every time I comb my hair from the strands that fall out, yes I do take my vitamins. It's just a very drastic step and isn't a magic cure for losing weight, you can gain it back or stretch the sleeve if not careful. But that's just my take on it, it's your body and life but it isn't the easy road to never gaining weight again.
Best of luck to you, OP! I wish I had this tool available to me earlier, so I wouldn't have "dieted" myself up to nearly 300 pounds. We all know what does and doesn't work for us. I hope the sleeve turns out to be the thing that works for you
I had less than 100lb to lose, and I haven't had a moment of regret. I'm not sure how someone who had much more to lose feels that their experience is particularly relevant to someone with a very different situation.
I first looked at surgery about 18 months before I had it done, and I was about 20lb lighter then. I would have only had 70lb to lose, and I'd already be at goal weight and have avoided the minor but constant hip pain I developed in the year before I had the surgery. The only reason i didn't have the surgery was because I didn't know about VSG - I was only given the band and the bypass as an option.
I just don't get why everyone is coming up with the same old arguments that everyone threw at the rest of us, and that we felt showed a lack of understanding of our struggle. If she has had lots of previous goes at losing weight and has been yo-yoing for years, then I completely get the choice for surgery.
Also, with the goal weight, I'm guessing the OP has a pretty slim build. An extra 35lb on a slim build, particularly if carried around the abdomen, can be a significant health risk.
Anyway, OP, do what makes you feel happy in life.
I was one of those who considered it 6 years ago. If i had done it then rather than another diet because if i can do " something as drastic as surgery, then i can do this extreme diet " and yes, lost 25 kg, then gained it back plus more. even "lifestyle change" diet with all the coaches, shrinks, nutritionists and positive thinking cannot guarantee a maintenance which sounds like what you are desiring more than anything else. The surgery is a great tool, it will help spur you towards that lifelong maintenance you want. Do it. You won't regret it. If I could do it today, I would... in a heartbeat, no doubts, no regrets. Good luck to you.
Surgery was 6/21 with dr. Q. In Tijuana. It went ' textbook' and other than scream- out- loud- gas pains in my shoulders, I am recovering nicely. I'm Looking forward to eating healthy, for not just me but the hubs too, and doing things I enjoy like walking, biking and yoga. To. All you negative nellies I say "pfft!" But thx for your concern. I can already tell I'm on my way to being the thin, confident, person I was meant to be. Thx Especially To christy and Florence. <3
Congratulations - glad it's all gone well for you. A friend of mine who has struggled with weight for many years went to my surgeon and is having surgery. Her BMI is 33 - but she's not healthy and not feeling good, and has been yo-yo-ing and now has high cholesterol. I'm very glad that my decision has also helped her to find a solution.
Girl! I just saw this post! I am so happy for you! You will not regret having the surgery. I ONLY had 75 pounds to lose which, to me, might as well have been 300 pounds to lose...its all individually relevant. Keep us updated on your progress. Glad you liked Dr Q!
