Default Re: Low BMI but desperately seeking surgery

I feel this surgery is for Morbid Obesity meaning that your life is at risk. I am 5ft 5 and weigh 267. I have had cancer.. pre diabetic and have problems breathing my arthritis is so bad I can't work. Still with all that it took me a lot to decided to do this. At my height my weight should be 159 to 165. But I will die without it..period. My world has shrunk and I am truly sick. That is why I am doing this, I know how hard this will be, I know going out for dinner, holidays, lots of food related activities will be no more. But I need to do this I have no choice. If I could go back and redo things, I would get busy and lose, I would be dedicated to exercise. I would live my life knowing health is wealth so I would not have to go to such desperate lengths. When they say these surgeries are permanent it does not mean you can't gain the weight back you can absolutely. It just means you have a tool to help you, but its what motivates you that makes the difference. I feel any Dr. who would even consider this surgery on someone only needing to lose 40 lbs is not a very reputable one. Because you still have options. When you have piled on 100lbs it is less then 1% that you will be successful losing weight and keeping it off. You still have a chance you just need to realize health is wealth and get out there and work out as though your life depends on it. Don't be like me and find out you have cancer and you have no other choice you can do it without amputating your body to do it. Good luck just remember everyday of life is precious and you can do it, I only wish that I had known then what I know now.

"I've done everything short of surgery, and just cannot stay motivated".

I want to comment on this statement you made.

This surgery is a tool and that is all it is. It is not a replacement for motivation. I just don't want you making this major life decision thinking you are going to magically be 125 pounds.

I can also say that based on published statistics the weight will more than likely not come off as quickly as those with higher BMIs.

Just make sure to educate and mentally prepare yourself.

    That's my 6 cents...take it for what it's worth

    Best wishes!

Weight day of surgery (8/8/12): 253.2

I agree with Christy. Most of us on here know only too well the solution to lose weight i.e food versus exercise but we wouldn't be seeking surgery if it had worked for us!!! I'm sue you are aware of all the risks and costs and still want to go ahead with this. Trying to lose weight all ones life is torture and the thought of fighting it each decade a person gets older is a nightmare, so I can understand why you are thinking of doing this. I also think surgery and recovery must be easier and less complications the lighter you are!! Have you spoken to different surgeons to ask if they are prepared to do it for you?

Christy and Florence, make some room on your bench (we have smaller butts now so there should be room lol).

One of the things I catch myself saying is "I wish I had done it earlier". I can't help but think how much my life would have been better if I had the foresight to have this surgery earlier. The precious moments I have missed with my children and my husband because I was too tired. It makes me melancholy.

The OP knows herself better than anyone of us here. If she is struggling losing the same weight over and over, it is/will impact her life in a negative way either physically, mentally or both. A person needs to do what they need to do to be in a good place. If she needs this surgery to do that, more power to her. Kudos to her for recognizing what it will take for her to get to that "good" place before she wastes years of mental and physical anguish.

For a large majority of us, the common denominator is that we have/had poor eating and activity habits. She is no different, except she is being proactive before she gets to where we were/are. The surgery helps many of us change those habits because of the physicality of the procedure. Her experience will be no different.

There are those who get the surgery, who are morbidly obese, who never change and then there are those of us who were just severely obese who do change. I would hate to have not had the surgery because I wasn't morbidly obese. I wasn't dying but I sure did have a poor quality of life being severely obese.

To the OP, only you know your head. This isn't some magic, secret surgery that needs to be jealously guarded by dying, fat people. If you can find a surgeon to help you get and stay healthy, more power to you. Good luck.

Do you have any co-morbidities (high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes)? I was a lower BMI (35-36) and I qualified for the surgery because I had high blood pressure and cholesterol.

One thing that stands out to me is that from my understanding the sleeve is just a tool. All the food issues/body dysmorphic disorder/ self esteem issues/ cravings/ etc will still be there. I am not saying you have any of those-just it's not a magic fix it that will fix all the mental issues that go along with food and dieting/weight/etc. I am getting sleeved on Tuesday after a long journey struggling to lose the 100 lbs I gained 4 years ago due to a difficult pregnancy and a death in the family.
I think 100 lbs is an insane amount to lose on my own. I have tried and tried. When my doctor suggestion surgery I cried at home all week.
I have come along way since then and know it will give me a new lease on life. I also have high blood pressure, joint pain, and sleep issues due to my weight.

I wish the best for you whatever you do. I just wish when I was 160 lbs I had been more successful being active and healthy and was kinder to myself. I feel like it's so common with women to never be content with our bodies and ourselves. I think my entire life I have been criticizing myself and my weight, even when I weighed 120. My goal for my future is to be thankful for the weight I am when I am done losing, and perhaps loving myself more.

Good luck on your journey! I just wanted to point out if might not totally "free" you since you will still have to do the work with the sleeve.

I am a low BMI person, I am barely at 30 actually just under. I tried Dr. Alvarez first and they said absolutely NOT, you must weigh in at a 30 BMI after your liquid diet when you arrive for surgery. I went on to Dr. Ortiz, who said yes after reading my history of yo yo diets and weight up and weight down and plus my family history of obesity (that generally strikes around age 50 and I am 49). Then I met with a local surgeon, who weighed me in and read my history and said yes. I talked to him about what happens when I lose weight on the liquid diet prior to surgery, he said he expects that and knows that if I ate again, it would come right back. He said dieting is not the key and nobody can stick to a diet. Now I feel like I had a struggle to get the surgeons to listen and agree and my BMI is almost 30 its like 29.6, had I been in the 27 range, I don't think any of them would agree. Problem is FDA requires BMI of 30 and I think they can get in trouble if they get caught. However, I do know a couple of people with a BMI of 27 that recently had the sleeve in Mexico with Dr. Almanza, so maybe they don't care what your BMI is, not sure. Now I have spoken to a lot of higher BMI people who all said they wished they could have done this way earlier so as not to reach the weight and BMI they were at. My doctor talked about how doing the surgery on low BMI patients who have not had really severe medical issues yet, can be more beneficial. Hopefully you can find someone to help you out.

I did find a doc, and surgery is scheduled for June 21st. I met with my PCP back here in NY, who was THRILLED for me and said she's seen amazing results. She did not once think I was 'too thin' for it, her only regret was that with such world renowned surgeons right in my hometown (Rochester), it's too bad I had to go so far away to get it done.

i am addicted to food (still) and i was diabetic, with meds, and a bmi of something like 40-45. if i could have lost weight and kept it off i would have done it by now.. this surgery saved my life and my sanity. the end, i woudln't change it for quids, anyone who judges including surgeons can go get..ya know. this is a tool, not a quick fix, if you don't eat correctly after you reach goal your going to be right back where you started, i too am 5"5 and starting weight was 107kgs, now i'm at 70kgs and coudln't be happier or healthier.

Im a few months post op, and I tell you I WOULD NOT recommend this to someone who ONLY needs to lose 35lbs. That is what nutritionist, personal trainers and planning is for!(and it'd still be cheaper then the surgery) This is a MAJOR life altering surgery that is VERY EXPENSIVE (even with insurance!) I would question any doctor that would perform something this extreme on someone who needs to lose "vanity pounds."

I 100% stick by my doctor and his guidelines for if the surgery is right for you: bmi over 40 OR 100lbs over weight OR a debilitating health condition like diabetes. My doctor also had me pass a psych eval to see if I was emotionally and mentally prepared for what this surgery was going to to do to me. I had to meet with with a nutritionist and sit through seminars about my "new life" and what it would be like. You could die from this surgery and post op is no walk in the park! The diet is hard, exercising is a MUST (4-5days a week), changing your thinking about food is a MUST! This surgery is NOT an easy way out!

I dont think a lot of people realize just how serious this surgery it is. It is NOT like Lap-Band or Bypass, you CANNOT reverse it! If you seriously want a weightloss surgery for 35lbs Id HIGHLY suggest lap-band but not a Sleeve!

I dont think you are in any way, shape or form qualified to "HIGHLY suggest lap-band". The woman stated she has done all the diets, exercise and has yo-yo'd for years. Oh and since when can you REVERSE the Bypass? And, the lapband is more dangerous than the sleeve and a lot less effective.

The issue here is that someone who starts at 300#'s only dreams of being 175, so they cannot imagine having surgery if they were already 175. But someone who has been struggling to lose weight staring at 175 has the same issues and struggles as YOU.

Should she wait until she is as overweight as you are and then have the sleeve?

I am glad you rethought your point of view. M highest weight was 220#. If I would have known about the sleeve when I was at 170#, I would have hd it done then! I could have saved myself a LOT of MONEY, GUILT, YO-YO DIETING, TEARS, SHAME AND HEARTACHE!!
