Question Brisbane Sleeve done via public hospital system.

I am being sleeved in the Public Hospital system after 8 years on the waiting list and 1 year doing the bariactric program thru Royal Brisbane Hospital. Has anyone else gone through the public health system? (Or have you all died from being on their tables? LOL)

Congratulations on finally getting to the top of the list! I used to live in Brisbane (Petrie Terrace area), and worked in Queensland Health in mental health services. I now live in the UK and work in the NHS. But I couldn't bear the wait of the public system, and possibly being told 'no', so I self-paid for my WLS as I was fortunate to be in a position to do so.

Really pleased that people are accessing the surgery through the public system though - obesity deserves to be taken seriously as a significant health and quality of life issue for the person themselves, and the future savings for the health system are clear. Don't know about in Oz, but here in the UK there continues to be crappy media stories about "tax dollars being spent on people who can't be bothered doing this the old-fashioned way", but I'm all for surgery being available for people who need it and who understand and are supported to meet the requirements to maximise its success.

    Keep us posted.

Hi December. Sorry this is not relating to your query about the public health system, but about your surgeon. How was you surgery and how did you find Dr Blair Bowden? My friend has a gastric band with him in 2008. She said he was an amazing surgeon and spoke very highly of him. I am hoping to have a gastric sleeve with him in December 2013 or January 2014.
