    Red face Tipping?

I dont know why I didnt think to ask this sooner! I am normally horrible at knowing when and how much to tip. For those of you that had surgery in Mexico, who and how much? The driver? Each way? At the hospital? At the hotel Lucerne? Any guidelines on how much is very appreciated!!!

I am heading to the airport for San Diego this afternoon!

I gave the driver $5.oo when he dropped me off at the hospital and I gave the driver $5. when he dropped me off at the airport. I did not have a need to tip anyone else. This was a great question.

$5.00 seemed to make them very happy and seemed to get a lot better service. On your way home take your letter from the hospital to the checkin and they are very happy to help you. Remember take it easy on your way home. Let them wheel you from place to place. Good luck.

LOL! Heading out for water eh? Well, I wont be arriving til 11pm, and I cant eat/drink after midnight. So I plan to hit the airport bar for a big swig of .... well, water! Although I am pretty sure Midori Sour is considered a clear liquid.... My surgery isnt until Friday, but need to hit the passport place tomorrow morning before the drive across so coming in a night early. Good luck to you!!

Its very close to the airport in San Diego... Its one of a few places that see you in person and is meant only for expedited requests. You have to show proof of travel to another country within 2 weeks. You also have to make an appointment through an automated system and be sure to bring everything you need with you. I picked a hotel that is walking distance from the agency so i wouldnt have to worry about a cab or anything. The automated phone number is 1-877-487-2778 . You can also get to a general live person, but they wont be specific to the san diego office. they are very helpful though at making sure you know what you need to bring, etc. Not sure if links are allowed so put this back together without spaces -- http : // travel. state. gov / passport / npic / agencies / agencies_5393. html. I had no trouble scheduling an appt less than a week away...

What are you talking about the Passport place? Is this because you don't have a passport?

No I dont have a passport... Last time I went to MX i didnt need one. Since I scheduled the surgery within 2 weeks, no way I could go the normal route since that can take up to a month... If you go to an in-person agency they will expedite. Not quite overnight... but the coordinator assured me i only needed the receipt showing I had applied for it, and my regular ID/Birth cert etc. Really hope that doesnt gum things up!

I tipped $10 to the driver on the way there because I had asked my patient facilitator and that is what she suggested. I did not fly in, I drove in, so when I arrived I had to take the parking shuttle to the airport and wait for the hospital shuttle. This was a huge hassle. I was so happy when the driver took me straight to my car on the way back that I gave him $20. I just wanted to get home.

Oh OK. I wasn't sure there was an issue with expedited service to pass through the border or something. I don't have the whole packet thing yet, just scheduled my surgery. I already have a passport so it isn't an issue for me.

Boooo, my surgery was rescheduled today... Due to the fact that a year and 5 months ago my house burned to the ground, so i lost my birth certificate. so i had to get a new one from California, they take for ever btw... So then it delayed being able to apply for my passport. The birth certificate arrived yesterday, but the post office said that even the expedited one takes 7 to 10 working days. Then I get on here tonight and find someone talking about a walk in passport place in San Diego, had no idea such a place existed.... Thank you aylajane, I am calling them first thing in the morning.... Wish now I would not have changed my date and plan tickets yet....

Have my appt at the passport agency in two hours---will let you know how it goes. You don't get it the same day I think but only a few days. I was told by the agency you only really need your birth cert, Id and receipt for passport application showing you applied and paid.. hope that is true! Will find out today. Also there are more walk in agencies... Chicago has one. But you have to be travelling within two weeks and have proof. Will post more later!
