Stop all meds while on pre-op diet?

Hi all,

I'm in the pre-op liquid stage and am confused about what I can take. My coordinator told me to stop all meds, including HRT, so I have but I also stopped taking all my vitamins - Vit D, fish oil, adrenal support, even melatonin when I need it to sleep. Does anyone know if there are any rules to what you can take/not take during this time? And what about right after? Are vitamins still ok and just not prescribed meds?

The only thing I was told to stop taking was ibuprofen. They said I could take my multi-vitamin, vitamin D and even my ambien up until the night before surgery. Every surgeon is different though so I would specifically ask the coordinator or nurse about the meds you have to take daily and if they tell you to stop ask them the reasoning. I am someone who needs a reason for everything so that things make sense. It never hurts to ask, right? Good luck!!

That's interesting! I would think if a person can handle it, it'd be better to keep up with the vitamins at least. You're right, I'll send her a message just to be on the safe side. Crazy how different so many doctors are and what they recommend. Thanks!

The only things you need to stop, normally, are any NSAIDS, Vitamin E and aspirin. I took everything else up until the morning of surgery.

I also was told I could still take my vitamins and insulin although I haven't been because this pre-op diet has regulated my sugar readings. I would also check just to be sure. Good luck!

I was told to continue taking my meds during my pre-op diet. It was just the morning of my surgery that I couldn't take them. I would inquire a little bit more information on the reasons why you shouldn't continue your meds during your diet, especially if you need one to help you sleep at night. Good luck on your surgery.

You should check back with the surgeons office. Not all vitamins are OK, I know some vitamins and the fish oil can thin the blood which is the reason for staying off of those before the surgery. The rest of the medication I would just double check to be safe.

I'm curious too. I have asked Lora and didn't get a response but I stopped taking my thyroid medicine 1 week ago and am definitely aware of the loss... so is my family. In his paperwork he says stop all meds except heart medicine. I will be waiting to hear!
