Default I'm 7 days out of Gastric Sleeve

I see people are eating yogurt and refried beans, after one week of surgery. My doc told me 2 weeks of liquid, then 2 weeks of baby like food, and then 2 weeks of soft food. I find myself hungry and thinking about food more now then ever. Can anyone tell me what there docs told them.. I also see the before surgery people had to fast to 24 hours and my doc told me to fast for 48 hours. I failed that but I just wanted to know what everyone else doc told them..

I see the same things. I am 8 days out of surgery. Also on the liquid diet for another week. I guess it depends on the doctor, this is what I am learning. But I am in the same boat as far as really wanting to consume something other than my shakes and more and more liquid. I just keep saying, one more week then I get to puree food. Not sure that will be any more appetizing, but hopefully it will. - Sandra

Every doctor is different and all have different guidelines, I would follow your doctors guidelines that he/she gave you, frustrating as it may be.

    Start weight: 286 (8/28/12)
    Pre-op weight: 272 (10/22/12)
Goal to weigh what my drivers license says: 225 (3/9/13)
    First goal weight: 199 (7/20/13)
    Second goal weight: 186 - 100 lbs lost ( )
    Third goal weight: 175 ( )
    Fourth goal weight: 150 ( )
Final goal weight: remains to be seen

My surgery was 3/11 and I got advanced to soft foods after day 21. I'll be eating soft foods for a month. My doc has me scared, telling me that beans and mashed potatoes can clog your sleeve. The sleeve is only about a half inch wide, 7-10 in long. I don't want to take the chance of developing a hole in my new stomach. Follow doctors orders.

I would follow your Doc's orders.. but mine were the same as yours.. I am just on soft foods. I haven eaten the re-fried beans and mashed potatoes.. but I can only get down tiny bites of them and about an 1/8 cup... take it slow.. I have choked (not thrown up.. ) on just accidently gulping out of a bottle of water and it hurts! For me.. I make sure I drink the protein shakes... lots of vitamins and they make me full..

that is the frustrating part of this whole thing...there are no specific, all across the board guidelines...I wish there were!! I was on a clear liquid diet for 3 days prior to surgery..fasting started at midnight the night before so my fasting was only like 8 hours. the first week after surgery I was actually on "full" liquids, which was basically the same as clear with some cream soups added in. Im on week 2 now and can have egg whites and refried beans...my Dr didn't say anything about it clogging your stomach...that FREAKS me out!!! although my bites aren't even bites, its more like licking them off the spoon..LOL...anyway...again thats whats frustrating because I really enjoyed those yesterday and now I wont eat them because Im scared...BLAST!
this is quite the learning experience for all of us! I think the BEST thing to do is follow YOUR doctors guidelines.

every doctor in the world has a different program.

you will find pre op diets that go from none at all, all the way up to a whole month. seems the majority is a week, i had none though...just nothing by mouth after midnight the night before.

you will find post op diet progression even more varied. some people are on soft or semi pureed foods within three days of surgery. some others don't get soft food for TWO MONTHS. i was on soft foods by day four, but i did that without doctor approval, and test bit everything...because i could not and would not do the protein shakes, and wanted to make sure i was getting protein and nutrients.

use your best judgement, and keep your doctor aware if you are not going to wait the long long times to eat.

Yeah, every time I think I am going to cheat and start early, I get scared. but these liquids are not holding me. the protein shakes give me diarrhea. I have probably spent a small fortune on different kinds and they ALL give me diarrhea. I wasn't hungry last week, but this week I am starving to the point of feeling week. I drink but that just hits my empty small stomach like a BRICK..lol I think i may some runny mashed potatoes or something because I literally feel EMPTY and have no energy. I am taking all my vitamins but I have no energy.. This is the worst part for me. I would like to do some walking, but honestly can't get out of the house because I can barely make it to the corner. I need more sustenance...

I think someone else talked about feeling hungry, like starving after 30 minutes. That is where I am. After the liquid makes it way through my stomach, i feel STARVING. I know it will get better; hopefully

Clear liquids week one. Full liquids week two. Week 3 is thinned out yogurt, thinned out cream of wheat/rice (watery consistency), move to pureed week four, week five I get soft foods, week six to begin with finely shredded foods (one at a time) like tuna. Week seven can introduce more foods as I tolerate. I was provided a thorough list of acceptable foods/drinks for each week as well as a list of high protein foods to start at week 7 (which does include beans).
My "bariatric team" was clear about how difficult it will be for me to adjust. The purpose of graduating food from one week to the next is to allow my stomach to heal, allow me to adjust to the small amounts, and to also feel as if I am getting a "reward" every week for following the diet (it's all mental-we survived this, now I get more). My binder even came with a schedule example of when to begin drinking, when to stop, when to "eat", when to walk.
Do follow your surgeon's /nutritionist's guidelines. They take into consideration things we may not know. Your general health, your labs, whether they had you on a pre-op diet, and the size of the stomach you have left. Best wishes....

Reading this thread has been helpful. I am 2 weeks post-op, lost a fast 27 lbs, due to the full-diet phase prescribed by the clinic (and the non-stop diarrhea) Been through 2 bottles of Immodian, became so weak and dehydrated I couldn't complete a shower, or post here. Surgeon called, said Immodian was fine, and consume salt. That was it. I said, "that's it, I'm taking this into my own hands." I found the best online comprehensive gastric sleeve manual, switched to its recommendations, made a pitcher of black decaf ice tea, and downed some V8 juice. The Diarrhea stopped in two days, and my rapid 1-2 lbs per day weight loss did also. I thought I was going to blow away.

Luke said there is unflavored protein powder. Where? I need that.

I have learned the lack of energy is a result of the dehydration, which isn't necessarily due to not drinking the 64oz of water, but not having enough electrolytes. That's what the surgeon meant. Salt is an electrolyte - solves the weakness. I found a tasteless additive online, fairly cheap, to add to all my fluids. While I wait for it to arrive, I began adding a few granules of salt to my ice tea, couldn't taste the difference. The 5.5 oz of V8 is great for the salt. I thin the Lactaid creamed cottage cheese with V8. Add salt to my Malt-o-meal. It has made a drastic difference in just a few days.

i'm telling ya, pinto beans mashed yourself with a little seasoning and watered down to the consistency you think you can handle are DELICIOUS. and as long as they are smooth they fill you up great. i know people on lots of other threads have lived on beans from taco bell once they got to the pureed stage. others puree chili from wendy's.

I'm 6 days post op. tomorrow I see my doctor for one week post check up. I've been on clear liquids except for protein shakes that are not clear but are thin. I'm able to get in all my 64 fluid oz and 60 G of protein. I've had diarrhea for 2 days but only once in the morning. I prefer this over being constipated. My Doctor scared me into drinking fluids after hearing if I got constipated I'd have to go to the ER to have it scraped out. So I drink often!!! The only thing is I have zero energy and I'm taking vitamins. I'm thinking due to excessive pain at my incision site, I'm taking pain meds that knock me out. And yes I'm a bit hungry, but I need to work on that and learn from my past mistakes that got me here. I need to change because I refuse to be obese again. So, my only complaint is the extreme pain at my incision site and lack of energ and try not to give in to my hunger. Thanks for letting me vent this out.
