    Default Hi! I'm New...

Hi everyone. I just stopped by to say hello. I am new to the forum. I went to an information session last year this time and opted not to have sugery. However, after all of the pain I am going through this year (knees kill me!) I feel like I really HAVE to do something ! Therefore, I went to another information session a couple weeks ago and I saw my doctor yesterday. I am interested in the sleeve and he is recommending this as well. I went to GBMC in Towson, Maryland - saw Dr. Moe. He mentioned that I should get down to about 200lbs. Well, this is not enough for me. I was 290 and as of yesterday, I am 278.5. Simply getting to 200 is still obese (I am 5ft 3.5in)! I am wondering if I should be considering the bypass. I do not have any co-morbidities and this is why the doctor is recommending the sleeve. I too would rather have the sleeve because I really do not like the idea of anything being bypassed. I am hear to receive some incite from all of you sleevers to see what results everyone has received.

Thanks for reading and your responses!

    Dee

Thanks Msvetrn! I hope so! In 3 months, I will have a sugery date. Either way, I do not think I want to have the bypass. I have already lost about 12 lbs, so I am trying to "help" myself have a smaller post op weight to better my chances of hittinh goal. 200lbs might be ok for someone else, but not for me with a 5ft 3 1/2 inch frame! HOwever, I do realize that getting to 200 lbs would not be considered a failure, but it would difficult making my mind feel the same!

    Thanks for the encouragement!

No bypass. I started this at 275. I am now 179. I am 5'3" and my goal is 130-135. 200 is too big for a 5'3" woman. My doctor was much more aggressive with my goals.

And correct me if I'm wrong folks, but he was just giving you a goal of 200 lbs, that doesn't mean that is where you are going to stop with your weight loss. Your body will stop when it wants to. Good luck on your journey!! I am at the 3rd of my 6th months of pre-surgery requirements and can't wait for July to get here!!!!

My doctor says that African American women and their community tends to not want to me too small (in some cases this might be true), but for me... I JUST WANT TO BE HEALTHY! I want my BMI to simply say normal...not overweight and definitely not obese. That's all! I am in it for the long haul. I do understand that I must stick to the plan and that is what I am trying to do now; get used to eating the right things so it will not be too difficult after the surgery. Thanks Robin34.

JessG, he said..with your weight and with the sleeve, you should expect to get to about 200lbs. I just looked at him. I did inform him of my concerns with that number. He did also say it depended upon the person. He also said he felt that I would be very successful at with the sleeve. I don't know...200 is certainly better than 278, that's for sure! I will have to work hard to reach goal! Congrats JessG on your journey. July will be here in no time!

I am 5'3 1/2" also. (I use to be 5'4"--dont know how that happened!) Anyway, I set my goal for 145 but am now 134. But, that said...dont muddle your mind with NUMBERS. Your body will let you know when it is comfortable.

I am 287lbs and I am 18 days out from surgery. When I spoke with my Dr. he said I should have no trouble getting below 200 and I am 5'10". I know I am taller then you but he says that i should not have trouble getting below 200. I set my goal for 190 but my wife feels that I will get below 175. She is more optimistic then me, LOL.

LOL! I know that is right, Christine53! That's how I feel too! I set my pyschological appointment today, as well as my Upper GI series, Ultra sound of the abdomen and chest x-ray. Now, I have to schedule my sleep study and EKG...I am keeping my fingers crossed. I do not think there will be anything that may hinder me from getting the surgery... Surprisingly, I felt a little making the appointments today...actually a little teary eyed. I feel a little guilty that I need to go to this great extent to lose weight! I feel like I should be able to do this without the 'tool' of the sleeve, but I do not think that is possible; otherwise the weight would already be off!

Just sharing my feeling...haven't told anyone this yet. Does this sound familiar to anyone or am I being a little over the top?!
