    Default Bread, Crackers, Tortillas...

I am working on making homemade bread and using a ton of whole wheat with lots of fiber like oats, flax seed, sunflower seeds...but my question is: will I ever really be able to eat bread, crackers, and tortillas?

I would of course be choosing the healthiest version of these three things, most likely be making my own so I can control what exactly is going into it. I can imagine a healthy wrap with tons of veggies and lean protein in it...but will there every be a wrap? Or a small sandwich with homemade healthy fiber bread? Or multigrain crackers with some tuna fish?

I understand that I will eat my protein first, then veggies, and THEN my carbs.

Anyways, I just wondered if you all had advice on this.

Yes, but keep in mind that they tend to be very filling, so you would be limiting the amount of protein that you are able to get in by eating them together. Crackers are a little better, they tend to leave more room than soft carbs. You'll be able to have crackers fairly early. I like to eat tacos, but soft tacos are difficult for me because the tortillas seem to expand and leave me feeling bloated. I use hard shells. Bread toasted works better too... I think if you make things crumbly, they pass through easier. Just be careful not to make these things too big a part of your diet.

I don't know why they couldn't be a part of your healthy lifestyle. Everything in moderation. Choose wisely and you will do fine.

Thanks for your responses! I swear you start this journey absolutely confused no matter how much you read. I made lettuce wraps last night and it was amazing that my family never asked for a tortilla! One step at a time changing for my whole family.

Aone make their own bread and have a great recipe?

Making bread has to be one of the most satisfying things you can do in the kitchen.
First question - are you going to be using a bread maker? Makes a difference and have recipes for that if you need them.
I always found home made bread heavier than shop bought bread so rarely used it for sandwiches. It was nutritious, tasty and toasted well, but a little went a long way. If you're not using an automated bread maker, then I have a lovely recipe for Irish Soda Bread that toasts well, is deliciously wheatey in flavour and chock full of wholes heat flour and wheat germ. What it doesn't have is yeast, so it is an absolute cinch to make.
Let me know a bit more about how you want to use the bread and I will scan and send recipes. Perhaps send me your email by private message?

Curious why you say we can have crackers early? I am delighted to hear this, as I like them more than bread!

My doc let us start having crackers at two weeks as long as we chew 25 times so they are mush. So you want to chose a cracker that isn't too hard at first. I was told to avoid breads, pasta, high carbs because they do full you up. However, my doc said if you want a piece of toast just make it really crispy once you are cleared for all foods. I love bread and I've made banana bread a couple times for my little one and I had a piece on Sunday and it was fine, soft and yummy. I don't make home made bread so I don't know about that. I went shopping yesterday and it was so hard to pass up the bakery, all I could smell was croissants. Mean evil bakers!
I agree that I was totally not prepared for this surgery as I thought I was. I knew I wouldn't be able to eat as much but I thought I could eat a normal diet. I didnt realize that what little food I can eat had to be mostly protein which is a challenging because I don't like meat much. I think if I was on this diet before I could have lost weight too, lol. Oh well, what's done is done and I'm almost down 30 lbs in 33 days so I'm happy. My Jammie pants fell off me last night and I haven't even started exercising yet.

When I eat any kind of bread, I get bloated. The only kind of crackers I eat are reduced fat Wheat Thins. But they seem like sliders so I have them as a treat only. I haven't had pasta for a couple of years, so I'm not sure how I will do if I ever have any Italian. I do have complex carbs aka an oreo or a butter cookie every now and then too. I just do it in moderation. So far that plan has worked. But I have been told by my nut to avoid anything white and to fill up on protein first.

Thank you for your help! No, I don't use a bread maker. I am wanting to make bread for my family, and of course make it as healthy as possible, so I can toast it and have it at times with some tuna fish or chicken on it. I have made bread a few times, so I am familiar with it. I bought whole wheat flour yesterday and found a recipe with no sugar. I also bought the ingredients I wanna add like my flax seed, oats, sunflower seeds... in a 7 grain mix.

Hey bestnester! What was in your lettuce wraps and how did you make them? They sound great and I'd love to try to make them too!

Hey! I used ground chicken (1 pound). You cook that on medium/high heat (I used my Wok, but any good pan works) with a chopped half onion. Add in 2 minced garlic cloves and 1 knob of minced ginger. Let that cook together for about 5 minutes on medium heat. In a microwave safe bowl, take 2.5 TB low sodium soy sauce, 1 TB rice vinegar, 1 TB sesame oil, 1 TB peanut butter (I use the natural JIF), 1/2 TB water, 1/2 TB honey and 2 tsp chili garlic sauce. Heat for 30 seconds and stir until combined. Then add that to the chicken. Chop 3 green onions and 4 oz of water chestnuts and add that in and cook for 1-2 minutes. Take off heat and add 1/4 cup chopped peanuts.

This made a lot. We have 2 kids and my husband had 2 lettuce wraps and was stuffed. I had about 1/4 cup and was full. I didn't add the extra peanuts on mine, for fear that it would be too much peanut butter and sometimes I can't handle that very well.

We used Romaine lettuce instead of Iceberg since Iceberg has like not nutritional value.

I really like bread to of all kind. but I know that you must be careful about what to eat, I can't eat but a little bit of food, I am glad of that, I had my upper teeth removed and am waiting for my teeth to get back so it make's it really hard to eat, so maybe next month I can get my teeth, and things will be better.

I had to break out the saltines pretty early on. I was feeling nauseous and nothing else was making me feel better so I ate 4 crackers and it did the trick. Turns out it was an acid issue but the crackers were the ticket.
