Im 12 days out. and having so many issues.

I had my surgery on Jan 23rd .I have been having such difficulties with it. Lots of pain. Have been re hospitalized once. cant seem to get enough protien in or enough hydration. when i start to dehydrate my stomach spasms and then i begin to vomit or dry heave which has been the most painful experience of my life. anyone else have any issues?

You may be allergic to the type of protein. If you are using whey or soy try egg protein it works wonders

Sorry to hear you're having such a rough time.

Are you on anti-nausea meds like zofran melts or similar?

Are you able to get liquids in, without trying to focus on protein? I had a lot of skim milk rather than protein drinks etc in early days.

Personally, I had to concentrate on liquids first, and then begin to start the protien thiing. I almost got dehydrated and started sucking on ice chips and sf popsickles. Use the nausea meds routinely, every 6 hours, not just when you need them for a few days.

I was the same way. Id love to say it got better for me but I am 5 months out and I still cannot eat enough to get all my protein or nutrients. The vomiting has stopped for the most part, normally about once every 2 weeks or so. Have hope it will get better. There are many days I had only liquids.

I was like that in the beginning. My surgeon said to concentrate on fluids to begin with and not worry so much about the protein. I would take my Zofran around the clock even if I had no nausea. I ate SO MANY sugar-free popsicles!!! Don't get frustrated.......it will get better!

Powerade Zero and sugar free popsicles worked wonders for me. I still have a hard time getting in all my protein but at least I stay hydrated.
Things will get better. hang in there!

well I also have auto immune diseases. one of which is Sjogrens syndrome which attacks anything moisture producing in your body and is also a connective tissue diease. My rhuematologist seems to think im having a flare up since i had to quite taking all my immune suppressors and steroids well before my surgery. so they have concluded that i dehydrate and for whatever reason no matter what it is when i wake up the next day or in the middle of the night and try to sip something it starts a chain reaction. and i take zofran and my pain meds around the clock but it doesnt help when this starts. ive stopped focusing on protein and trying to keep as hydrated as possible although i fear another trip to the ER is going to happen soon. as i have had this major issue happing the last 2 nights and days. and now am feeling even more weak then before. i only stop drinking it seems when i sleep. and thenthe dehyrdation begins i cant sleep and drink at the same time. i thought this was going to help with these diseases but until i can get back on my meds and get these stupid diseases under control Im going to have to do my best to deal with it. i must say it is the most painful and draining thing ive ever been through. and im a mom of 3

I'm so sorry you're having such a rough time. When have they said you can start back on some of your meds to help? I was back on my normal meds for back & chronic pain, blood pressure once I got home but just told to crush it. I did that for about 2 weeks and now am back to swallowing whole as long as its not too big.

Since you have all those factors, you're not exactly typical. Stay in close contact with your surgeon and your rheumatologist and keep them apprised of what's going on.
