In truth, I can be pretty damn "abrasively decisive". So, pre-surgery when I sensed someone starting to go off on the entire not agreeing with it speech, I would politely, but firmly and in a tone that did not brook further discussion say, "I've been thinking about this for over a year. I've tried Atkins, South Beach, calorie counting, Sensa, Weight Watchers and the Slim Fast diets over the last decade with minimal success, meaning I lost weight, but ended up gaining twice as much back. I NEED something MORE than just a diet and exercise program coupled with sheer willpower, and I truly feel surgery is right for me. I appreciate your concerns and reservations, but don't worry -- I've done my research and I feel confident this is the right decision." That ended 90% of those naysayer conversations which quite frankly, I didn't want to hear. I didn't need to waste my time listening to them waste their breath when my mind was already 100% made up.

Now for those people who were rude? I said "Well, we all do what we feel is best for ourselves, and this is what I've decided is best for me. We'll just have to agree to disagree, because I'm not going to change my mind just because YOU don't agree with it."

I am perhaps more direct/blunt/mean, however you want to label it than a lot of people, but I got very few people acting un-supportive of my decision - at least to my face. Perhaps they thought/knew I would tell them off? Who knows. I definitely feel for those of you that have people coming at them from every angle though. Just have confidence in yourself and your decision -- those that are only fair weather friends/acquaintances will fade out pretty quickly.

This is the exact reason I have only shared my decision with four people in my life. Luckily, I have great insurance (working in the medical field is a plus) so I only have to wait three months and will have surgery in May. Prior to the surgery I will share with just a few others, after the surgery I will decide what I plan to tell people. Those closest to me know how long and hard I have struggled and the four who know are the most supportive. I am waiting to share with my parents until closer to the surgery because they don't need the worry about surgery, etc. i know when it comes time, they will be ok once they have processed it. I wasn't sure I was doing the right thing but your post reassured me that I was. thanks - see we help even when we don't know it

Lee, you crack me up! I can just see all 5 foot of you letting people have it! LOL If you don't stand up for yourself, no one else will! You have to have confidence in what you are doing and be knowledgeable about it. I had thought about surgery for years, even before the sleeve was available. I'm soooooo glad I waited. I knew surgery is what I needed, but I didn't want the by-pass. Once I found out about the sleeve, there was no one that could change my mind. Yes, there are risks with anything you do, but the risks were so much higher doing nothing!

I have been very vocal about what I've done. I am just so proud of myself for finally feeling like I am worth it. I have been a part of a boot camp for over 18 months before surgery and on a restricted diet, I had only lost 25 pounds in 18 months! I obviously needed more.

Out of all my co-workers and family, only one person has been rude to me and let me know she disagreed with it. I told her that I make my decisions for me and not for her, so she really doesn't need to worry about it. My Mom did send my older brother tons of emails to let him know she didn't like that I made the decision w/o her and she was scared for me. But, in the end, she was just nervous for her baby and also still thinks - that even at 36 - I need my Mommy for everything. The woman still tries to go into dressing rooms with me!

I am proud of all of us - those who have had it, and those about to. It is a scary, tough decision but it's the right one for us. Don't let other people dictate what you need. We all did that for too long, and that is what got us all here.

I have told the people in my life if they can be onboard with me and only say positive things get out of my life. I am trying to
share a big move in my life and if they can't support me then I don't need them. On the other habd I have a lot of people that
ask questions to learn more about the whole process. I don't mind becuase at least they are trying to understand, and even if they don't
they are supporting me. Move forward and don't worry who you lose in your advancement.
