    Default Decisions! Decisions!

So after 2 years of going back and forth with my decision, I finally made the choice last month to have the surgery and took the plunge by paying my deposit and scheduling the date...March 22. Well, during that time, I also decided to look for a new job after 9 years at my current employer. So, fast forward a few weeks, I am now in the final stretch of being offered a position at a great company. Well with this new company, I have found that their insurance covers bariatric surgery. My current place of employment does not, and does not cover any complications related to the surgery (one of the reasons it took me so long to decide to do the surgery).

So here's my struggle that I'm currently dealing with...knowing that I pretty much have this new job deal in the bag, do I cancel the surgery I have schedule in Mexico and wait to do it with the new insurance company? Or do I just do it in Mexico, get it over with, and start on my new life?

    I'm so torn!

I think an important thing to remember is that you have to be at an employer for 12 months for FMLA covers your extended out of office. I had to wait until after November 20, 2012 to have my surgery as I wanted to make sure my job was protected. When I had my lap band out in April 2012, I only took 2 days off before going back as I didn't have FMLA to save my job. Just some food for thought.

    Highest Weight - 291 12/18/2012 (Pre-op visit)
    Weight at Surgery - 285 12/27/2012
Date I reach 245 (weight when lap band was removed 4/2012) -
Date I reach 225 (lowest weight achieved with lap band) -
    Date I reach onederland -

    Hi Amanda!!!
I would wait until the job is signed, sealed and delivered before any cancellation action on your March booking..
If the procedure is covered, you are confident you meet their criteria, and, you can wait the year ( if that os a requirement), you would be saving $$
If however, your health and well being is at risk I would keep to your original plan.
You will still need to check out the sick leave policy of your new ( hopefully) employee.

I would say get it done as soon as possible and get started on your new life. I had my surgery in early November in TJ and even though I had some minor complications which had to be treated here in the US, I still would do it over again in a second. After less than 3 months, I can breathe again. My blood pressure is normal. I can move around and walk up a flight of stairs without feeling like I'm going to pass out. I only wish I would have considered surgery sooner.

You also might want to find out what hoops you will have to jump through with your insurance company. It was going to take me at least until August 2013 before I could have surgery, so I just went ahead and did it in Mexico. I figure I will be very close to goal weight by the time August comes around. HOWEVER, many people are not comfortable going to Mexico, so only you can make the decision Good luck!!!
