    Default On pre op diet

I just started my preop diet today and I am really hungry. Is there any tricks to making it thru the preop diet. I am eating protein shakes and a piece of Chicken every day. Also I have a really bad headache. I am determined to be successful at the pre op diet, but I am really hungry at least on this first day. Surgery scheduled for jan 17.

Also it seems like it is mostly women on this site. Is there many men who do this sugery. My BMI is 41 but I have high blood pressure as well. 160 over 100 and I am only 30 yrs old. My doctor is the one who convinced me to do this telling me he would rather see me control of my weight than be on blood pressure medicine at my age. I have been battling my weight for awhile and I am confident this is the right decision. I just hope I can make it through the pre op diet phase. And I hope I have a successful recovery.

When I did the pre op diet I was drinking some clear liquid when I wasn't drinking a shake. I drank lots and lots of broth, sugar free drinks and popcicles which really helped me. After the 3rd day or so you'll feel much, much better/less hungry. By the end of the 2 weeks I was down from 5 shakes a day to 3 because I just wasn't hungry. Hang in there. You can do it.

Thanks for sharing all this good information. I am having the surgery in April and I am just getting all my pre-op information. The pre-op diet sounds even harder than after the surgery. But I know you can do it because we can do anything for 2 weeks. Keep up the good work and good luck.

On day two of this pre op diet. I am trying to mix my milk with water and then add in my protein mix (1/2 portion) so I can have more shakes during the day. Woke up starving, but I am determined to try this approach. Everyone says it gets easier after the first few days. I hope so.

Hi Justin!! We have the same surgery date. This is my first day on the shakes as well. There are many things you can do with the vanilla protein. I'm a little hungry also but I heard it does get easier. When you blend the shakes with a blender and ice cubes, it seems to make a little more. I have some receipes if you want me to post them. Looking forward to going home for a popcicle...don't think or abcess about food....we can do this Justin!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Justin, a typical meal usually has about 24-28 grams of protein. If you are hungry you need more protein. Now I do not start my liquid diet until this Monday (7th), but it is my understanding that it is NOT calorie-limiting. I do not know if Alaska has Metabolic Research Centers. But if so, you need to go there and get their protein drink packets. They have many flavors you just mix with water and they are very high in protein and they taste like crystal lite. This will be my main source of protein while on clear liquids. And if you feel like searching this site, there are many ideas from the alumni that will help you too. Good luck!

My doctor told me he wanted me to get 60 to 80 grams of protein a day. I am getting slightly over that cause I am having three shakes a day which is around 90 grams of protein. Plus whatever protein is in yogurt or chicken broth. So I am actually getting more protein than what the doctor really wants me to get. But I am already starving so I don't really want to cut out another shake to drop my protein. I dont think it is a big deal cause I am still staying below 100 grams. But I am trying to do this right cause I really want this to go smooth. ie without complications. I have definitely heard many horror stories from all my research at this point.

gotta make it thru 14 more days!!! Judith let me know how you are doing on your preop. Maybe we can keep each other motivated!!

Red face Re: On pre op diet

Justin..I just a a suger free jello and it was soooooo good!!!! You can have yogurt?? I'm jealous. I have 4 shakes a day..4 hours between them. They are about 20 g each. I bought ss flavorings to add to the vanilla. I'm even bringing a blender to work since they are so much better blended. Just think Justin...we only have 13 more days to go!!! Thats nothing compared to how long it took us to get to this weight. Lets write each day and keep following what we ate...like a journal...plus it will keep us honest...NO cheating!!!

I am actually allowed to eat one serving of meat a day along with three protein shakes. So for today, I have had 1 protein shake and 2 oz shrimp. I can have two more protein shakes. The main thing is I have to stay under 40grams of sugar and around 600 cal per day. Along with the 60 to 80 grams of protein. I think I might be having some sugar withdraw though cause of just going through Christmas. I have been having cold sweets and headaches for the last two days. I use yogurt unsweetened as my chicken substitute cause I am on the north slope of alaska, and dont have a lot of options. I callled the doc to see if I could do that and he said it was ok as long as I kept it to one serving.

Hi Justin. I just noticed that you are in Anchorage. I am waiting for my orders for a new job with the DoD in Fairbanks; we hope to be moving in the spring.

For me, the 2nd day of the pre-op diet was the WORST! I also was allowed some lean protein in the evenings and it was almost like my stomach was saying to me..."WHY are you teasing me with these paltry amounts of food?!? SEND DOWN MORE!!!" But the good news is that after the 2nd day it really did get easier and in the end, the pre-op diet was a breeze. You can do it!
