    Default Lactose intolerance

I was wondering about how I will manage post op with my lactose intolerance.

The problem is that most protein shakes are made with milk or whey so they are out of the question for me, unless I want them to pass through like a steam train!

Do any of you have a similar issue and if so, how did you get around it?

Try replacing the milk base with soft tofu you can find this in the produce section. Good recipe: 1/4 of a block of soft tofu,1/2c juice of your choice and 1/2 frozen fruit of your choice. Tofu has a neutral taste and assumes the flavor of any thing it is combined with.

Thanks for this Kris. I live in Switzerland and there isn't a great selection in produce but I do have an Asian supermarket close by so I will pop in there and ask if they have it, I have seen the blocks of the firm tofu so hopefully they can help.

You can use the firm just adjust the liquid to suit your taste or thickness desired. Hope this helps.

They do have protein shakes that you can mix with water. I haven't tried them, and imagine they wouldn't taste great, but they'd feel you up and get you protein. Or you can look in to some protein shots. Some folks like them, and some say they taste awful.... and can be on the pricey side, like a case of 12 for up to $35.00. Here is a website, I will probably be ordering from, its a different brand but they are still 3oz shots with 42g Protein and here they are a case of 12 for $19.99. http://www.invigorate360.com/discoun...protein-shots/ Hope this Helps, And We are thinking about you Today. Good Luck!

Hi Hollywood...the problem is that those protein shots/shakes/etc are all made from Whey and so have lactose in them. This rules them out even though I need to take such things.

This is why I am looking for options...

    Gal,
I was at my local grocery and I saw they do have soy based protein powders. Here are some links for some of them:
    http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/soy.html
    www.genisoy.com

    Hope these help.

For any one who is lactose intolerant I have been able to find Whey isolate protein powder that is lactose free. It took some doing and it is more expensive than general protein powder but from what I have read that Whey is superior protein to Soy, (it goes whey, egg white and then soy is much lower down the list) then it is a good alternative to be considered.

thanks for that Kris. Do you think soya milk would solve the problem? The tofu we have at supermarkets here are not liquid, but instead they are blocks, like this one:

That is exactly what I was talking about. You just need a blender or a food processor and add a little extra liquid. There are some soy based powders out there. The sell them at our local grocers. Were you able to look into the soy based protein powder links I sent you previously.

You know, I was lactose intolerant before the surgery and now I don't have any trouble with skim milk. It is so totally weird. I have made smoothies with tou and it's a great alternative!

Hi. I am also lactose intolerant. In Australia we have protein drinks that are "fruit juice style". eg Enlive Plus comes in strawberry, orange and a couple of other flavours. They come in a "popper" container. My hospital had them and our pharmacies have them. Good luck !!

I'm not lactose intollerant so I'm not sure this will help, but, If you have a protein shake that is lactose free, could you mix it with almond milk. I use unsweetened almond milk because it only has 1 gram of carb as opposed to 15 grams in regular milk. I hope this helps.
