When I first had the surgery I had to find an alternative source of protein from the usual dairy & whey variety, being lactose intolerant. Also being allergic to soy didn't help my quest. I was doing the pre made Egg protein powders, which provided a decent amount of protein but the taste wasn't something I could handle, so I decided to make my own. I used all organic ingredients, but thats just me. Im sure anything would do.
I was doing Tofu, with mixed berries frozen, a cup of greek yogurt, a dash of vanilla extract and lactaid milk. I used all the serving sizes for each item added, and it made a little bit more than my magic bullet could handle, and depending on the thickness I would add more milk as desired and when it was all said and done it tasted amazing and provided I believe somewhere around 35g of protein, Which is not as much as you can get in a shake but it tasted a hell of a lot better. It was a little heavy on the stomach so I don't suggest it until your personally ready but I started them I believe somewhere around a month after surgery. I'm currently only 3 months out and still doing the shake.
My newest favorite.
1 cup milk/soy milk/coconut milk (you get the drift)
1 tblsp sf general foods international coffee (caffeine free)
3 scoops protein
ice
Blend and yum
Best NSV - fitting on a kid's amusement park ride with my 4 yr old grandson!
CFIDS =Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) Also dx with post-bariatric reactive hypoglycemia; and chronic gastritis (both sleeve complications). Permanently disabled.
Start weight 335, down to 218, up during gastritis. Have accepted there is no way to lose it with my hypoglycemia. Current weight 260. Currently doing 10 day sleeve reset and determined to get back down to my post surgical weight or close to it.
Here's a couple that have kept me from gagging a time or two.
This one I call "snicker doodle" because it tastes just like a snicker doodle
1 scoop of vanilla protein powder
2 Tbls coffee mate sugar free Carmel macchiato coffee creamer
1 C. Skim milk
1 tsp. cinnamon
Blend. Enjoy!
You can add some ice cubes when blending if you like a little thicker shake.
This one I call "peanut butter & honey shake" (I'm not very imaginative)
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
1 Tbls. Peanut butter
1 Tbls. Honey
1 c. Milk
Add ice for a thicker shake
Blend and be amazed!
For those of you who like peanut butter, but don't want all the calories in their shakes, Torani makes a sugar free Peanut Butter flavored syrup
Also, I use 1 tbsp. of peanut flour in the protein shake and it makes it taste like I'm using the peanut butter, but without all the fat.

I am 5 weeks post op and it has taken me that long to find a good one I like and I mean LIKE....I had been using the isopure chocolate since prior to the surgery to get used to it...then post surgery could not stand it...tried a bunch of them...new whey from walmart for example...nothing worked gag me!! Last week I picked up these little 11 oz cartons of ATKINS advantage MILK chocolate Delight shake 15 g protein, 1 g sugar...only 2g net carbs...160 calories...don't really like those either...today a miracle happened...I poured my 11 oz ATKINS into my blender and added 6 oz of ice cold water and two scoops of the isopure chocolate protein powder mix...blended it and bam! 65 g of protein in an 18 oz drink that actually tastes very very very GOOD!!!!! Just had to share....finally got one I like and can do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I appreciate all the good info on protein shakes/etc.! One brand that I have used for a year or so (I haven't had surgery yet - this was just a supplement/meal replacement sort of thing) is Arbonne. Is anyone familiar with it? It's sold through independent consultants -- I'm curious if the ingredients are up to snuff with the best stuff you guys use?
