Do people just not visit people in the hospital anymore?
in the last 5 years i have been in the hospital for more than 2 days at a time over 8 times and I have only had 3 people ever come visit me. I dont know what it is but I even had people on the phone saying i am on my way and they never made it. I think hospitals scare people and they just dont go.
I think a lot of it stems from timing (everyone is so busy) and also if you're in the hospital for only 1 night or so after surgery, they'd rather wait and come see you at home. I mean, I was an hour away from everyone and really didn't expect anyone that night after the ones who were with me all day left. I'm not sure that I would have been worth visiting anyway. I much prefer someone to visit me at home if I'm just in over night. Especially if I'd had surgery that day.
The average hospital stay has continued to decline compared to 20-30 years ago. That said my wife was my only visitor for my three separate hospital stays. I had a few relatives wanting to see about coming out for various procedures and I politely declined their offers. When my father was admitted into the hospital with a blood clot, he tried to wave me off from driving 6-7 hours to see him. I went anyway; we were all glad I did. While was there, I noticed there were very few visitors on the floor my father was on.
I don't really do well in hospitals. I think it is all the beeping machines that put me on edge. I would just as soon no one come to visit me anyway because I am grouchy. But I agree with others, they get you out so soon now and everybody has to work these days that people just don't have time to visit.

There are several factors. One being that people just don't have or take the time. There is no sense of unity or community like there once was. Also, many health care facilities would prefer to keep visitors to a minimum. Every person who comes to visit at the hospital is another chance for infection or contagious sickness.
