Default Birth Control & The Sleeve

I was wondering if anyone is having problems with weight loss after getting the sleeve while on birth control. I've used the shot a few times in the past and liked it alright. I liked that it lasted a few months, but even with that time frame I found it hard to remember to reschedule for the next shot. I'm terrible, I know! I've been seriously considering getting Implanon implanted into my arm, because it lasts for 3 YEARS and in no way do I want children in the next couple of years or so. I'm 24 years old and most of the girls my age already have at least one child and can't afford to take care of them :/ I want to be able to provide for my future children. Anyway, I got off track lol. Sorry!

This was a big deal for me, too. Before surgery, I had the Mirena IUD inserted. My surgeon and PCP both recommended the IUD above any other birth control. I had been on the pill previously (this is so much easier!). I haven't had any problems with weight loss due to birth control (and if there is, I haven't noticed).

I see my Ob today for birth control. I am considering implanon as well. Not dead set on it yet. I want to hear her recommendations. I'll let you know how it goes. I also want something semi long termish. I have my little boy and girl and not ready for more.

Thank you ladies for your replies! I figure it's either the shot or Implanon for me since everyone knows the patch doesn't stay on, my boyfriend could feel the NuvaRing, and pills are not a option thanks to my memory. So something long term (but not permanent) is required.

So my ob highly recommended the mirena iud. Said it won't stall or slow down weight loss. Plus you can keep it up to 5 years.

    Hey there!

I had my surgery intake appointment today and they were pretty serious about discontinuing my birth control pills after surgery. I've read conflicting things online and I'm super confused. I've been on the pill for 7 years and don't want to come off at all! If we're getting the sleeve and not changing the place we absorb or losing intenstines, why would the pills work differently? I'm not okay with getting an IUD and I DO NOT want to get pregnant at all! Does anyone have any insight into why simply a smaller stomach changes the way you absorb?

Gosh I haven't heard anything about this - I just went back on the pill this week after my surgery, doctor said it was fine. What are you hearing?

Well, the nurse practitioner turned my birth control pills into a 20 minute conversation. She said the only effective method of BC for women that get the gastric sleeve is an IUD or the Nuva Ring. Then I googled it and also had my friend email her bariactric surgeons office and they told her that they recommend waiting 4 weeks after surgery before restarting it but that it's an acceptable form of birth control. Then I saw this thread and thought I would ask what experiances you all have had. I'm hopeful that your doctor started you back on it, if heard so many conflicting things!

The IUD was recommended to us, too. We were told the pill could become more unreliable after surgery. I've heard it could be issues with absorption, and also passing through too quickly. Not sure, but when my OBGYN tells me that she knows women who've gotten pregnant on the pill soon after surgery (that the chance goes up), and that they recommend the IUD as the number 1 form of BC... I went with the IUD. I guess it comes down to you personally. I know I want to wait 18-24 months after surgery before getting pregnant. I know I'm not ready for a child, yet. Getting the IUD was a good decision for me (it fucking SUCKED the day of, but haven't had problems since). It's easy, no remembering.

That's like saying read the "Sleeve nightmares" before having surgery. There are risks to everything. Most people with any sort of intelligence will go ahead and do some research before making a decision to see what is a good fit for them.

I have the Mierna, I have had it since my son was born 5 years ago. I had it swapped out on 11/2 and couldn't be happier! I love it don't have to think about it and it is removable at any time. On the Plus side, if your insurance is covering your surgery then your Mierna may be covered since you will probably reach your out of pocket with the surgery.

No, it's not the same as researching sleeve nightmares. I lived through a summer of my wife going through severe depression, suicidal episodes, and planning a divorce because of Mirena. Everything went back to normal once it was out. Tens of thousands of women had the same experiences as my wife, you just have to look it up. And actually, I did research sleeve nightmares before going through with it - the incidence of problems with mirena is far more likely than it is with sleeve.
