    Default Food restrictions?

I have a question about what food we can't eat after surgery say 6 months out. Are there any restrictions or are there just some things that some can not tolerate. One person posted that their nutritionist said no coconut. Just wondering if there is any foods I need to say my good byes to, before I have my surgery. I'm going out to buy a coconut tomorrow.

My doctor told me corn, celery, popcorn, or coconut may cause blockage.

Thank you - good to know. So I need to finish off the popcorn before surgery. I think I'll have some now.

Oops. Red meat is not a problem though I have not had tons of it thus far in my first 6 months. Why no red eat, did he say? On my third week appointment he said eat what I want and my stomach will tell me if it doesn't work.

I wasn't given any restrictions for after three months - but as above, you test things with small amounts and your tummy will let you know.

I was only told no white breads, pasta or rices until 6 months out because they have a tendancy to ball up in your stomach and take up valuable space ... and of course no fried/sweet foods. I"m just over 5 months out right now and can eat about anything. I do notice i have trouble with corn and beans because of the skin on them so i stay away or eat refried beans for the protein. You just have to remember that your stomach is in charge and it WILL let you know when it doesn't like something, i get an "ache" for lack of a better term after a couple bites of something it doesn't agree with so i just stop and go on to something else.

I have no restrictions. I've eaten red meat, corn, peas, popcorn and coconut. I'm personally avoiding bread because I would rather eat something more substantial. I use coconut in my shakes sometimes and I chew red meat very well. I use corn and peas in soups & stews, and I've eaten popcorn at the movies. The only thing I haven't really tried to work back into my diet is caffeine, and only because I still struggle with my fluids half the time. Once I am able to get all my fluids more than 4 or so days per week, I'll start having my daily coffee again. I don't want to risk dehydration (I live in a place where it is quite dry & very cold in the winter. Water is a must here.)

Ultimately, every doctor has different restrictions (or none) and different timelines on when to re-introduce certain foods. The best advice is to follow your doctor's orders.

I wasn't given any real restrictions either. I eat red meat, I've had fried foods on very rare occasions, I eat celery once a week. I figure my tummy will tell me if it doesn't like it. Bread doesn't go well, only tried a few bites once, but I have had a few bites of pizza crust with no problems. I just chew everything to baby food consistency. Just follow your dr and what you feel is best for you.

I have no restriction on food other than the first couple of months. I have tried pretty much anything. I couldn't have dairy or spicy food at the beginning. First few months.

I don't eat much bread, rice, pasta, potato because of the high carb content. But I will eat it if I want to.

Every doctor is different. My stomach tolerates anything. Popcorn, no problem. I can eat a few cups in one sitting. That is the problem. It slides right through my sleeve.

My Dr didn't really give me restrictions other than alcohol (it's a non issue for me because I don't drink). I haven't been able to tolerate bananas though. I have tried a few times and even yesterday. They just do not agree with my tummy. Everyone is different, I know folks who can tolerate bananas like it's no ones business. I have tried a little bit of rice, it fills me up too quickly, pasta- no issues, pizza- no issues, bread- no issues, just a bite or two because these things fill you up really quick. I tried salads and am fine, just can't eat too much of it. So, no issues or restrictions for me and there is absolutely no mention of coconut in my guidelines.

Thanks for all your responses. I guess I am good then because I can wait for a few months to have a little of everything. I don't need to say good bye and eat it all now. HA HA
