    Question "Alternative" protein powders?

With the help of my wonderful rheumatologist I've come to the conclusion that even though I can get whey protein down now, it's flaring up my myofascial pain - well, that and eggs....grrr....
I already can't have gluten and milk products in general and now... numb fussy body!

Anyway, this leaves me with...hard cheese, chicken, (some) pork, beef and fish(haddock and scallops - allergic to shellfish). (Turkey makes me nauseous and I don't/won't eat game meats).

Makes it kind of hard. Just had to have meatballs for breakfast...
    Enough whining.

I'm checking on some alternative protein powders.
Anyone tried pea protein or rice protein?
I know they aren't ideal but just to add a little something...otherwise it's going to be just proasis and while that's fine I'd like to have something to make a smoothie with.

    thanks!

Sorry to hear this - but good that you're able to identify the difficulty. As you know I'm so new to this I have no useful advice, but just wanted to post and say hope you find something!

Man, that is tough, Grace. It would make me want to eat something totally off Menu-but you can't cuz it'll make you sick. Grr. I'm sorry you've had such a hard time and continue to do so...the surgery was supposed to make life easier!

Yes, I've tried them--tried them all when I was so dairy intolerant right after surgery and could use the whey protein shakes. They are all gag-inducers for me. I also tried soy protein powders. So/so. Good luck, Grace!

Bummer. Looking like it's time for me to figure out how to get 120+ gms of protein a day with just the food I can eat if possible. Couldn't stay on shakes forever anyway.... but to lose my quest bars...sad over that one.

i've had soy protein powders in a shake and didn't mind it. it's a bit beany. needed a little maple syrup or malt to take the edge off it.
i haven't had rice powder but i've drunk rice milk many times. oat milk too. they're both good.
silken tofu with a little soy and grated ginger is nice in the summer, or freshly made sweet tofu, still warm is really good.
dunno about the pea protein powder..
hey congrats on your NSV by the way -- i'm impressed!
    hope you're feeling better soon.

Tofu is bland and takes on the flavor of the other ingredients. So, maybe try some chopped up in your scrambled eggs. I make "mock" egg salad with it too. It comes in firm and silken (which is smoother). I cut the firm up in 1" strips, coat with cajun spices and baked on a cookie sheet till brown. Not french fries, but not too bad.

Edamame rocks the house. 1/2 c. is 12 grams protein.

Edamame and tofu - got it Thanks! I'll just go for small amounts since it's soy.. soy and hypothyroid don't mesh well but I can do it maybe twice a week.

What about chia seeds? I'm not sure how many grams of protein in them, but I know you can add them to so many different things. So maybe not enough protein on their own, but as a booster for other things. It's supposed to be full of Omega-3 and lots of fiber.

Hope you find something that works for you!!

Hey, I have the same problem - no gluten or dairy for me. The only dairy-free protein powder I've tried so far that I like is Warrior Protein - it is rice based and uses stevia for sweetening (I can't do artificial sweeteners either). Give it a shot. I use coconut milk, mostly - too much soy makes me feel horrible.

I've tried a pea protein one, Vega, but wasn't really crazy about it - but then, I don't like peas, either!

Dee.....can I ask how you make your edamame? I bought a bag of frozen and hear that it is very good, but don't know how to fix it.

    Grace....what does NSV stand for?
