Hi all, I am in the process of Gastic Sleeve Surgery. Hoping the new year will bring on the surgery. Enjoying all the info on this site. You all have answered a lot of questions I've had. I live 2 hrs from the hospital and a bit unsettled about the drive home after surgery. For those that had that far to go home how was the drive home? Wait to get an appt with the surgeon, will have many questons for him(her).

I had surgery in Mexico. Four hour flight home plus dealing with the Atlanta airport, then 2 hour drive. No problems.

Ok, I'll be the killjoy worrier in the group. You'll have been on pain meds. You'll have just had major surgery. Isn't there someone who can drive you home? I would not presume you'll be up to it. You may...but more likely you'll not be. Sorry but my hosp literally would not release me without a driver and I live 1 hr from there and couldn't drive for a good 8 days after surgery. It's not if you can stay awake and manage. Remember you need to be able to hit the brakes hard if necessary, have your wits about you and I'm sorry to say you might just get nauseous. Please try to find someone to come get you. You ultimately know your body and how it handles things, but I don't want you to think this is like a tooth extraction or something....

    Welcome to the forums!

For me, the worst part of the entire experience WAS the drive home. I barely used my pain meds in the hospital, and once I was home only when I went to bed at night, but the drive home was very uncomfortable for me due to the jostling of the vehicle, and I also felt nauseous from the motion. I lived about an hour away from the hospital at that time. What helped me was to lie the seat as completely flat as possible and I pretty much passed out on the way home. The discomfort and nausea weren't things I wouldn't have been able to handle had I stayed awake mind you, but it was definitely uncomfortable.

Don't worry though. So many people have traveled to and from Mexico for their surgery with little complication, so I'm sure you'll be fine being a local!

I have a surgery date......Oct 29.... oh boy, now for the 2 week- 800 calorie diet. Ugh. Will do it cause I have to. Anyone want to tell how they got through it. Doctor Alvarez wants me to lose 5 lbs more before surgery; I'm at a standstill. Been riding my bike every evening and do a lot of walking what else can I do?

Kept my eye on the prize of re-gaining my health, with every sip of the liquids I took in, every exercise I did. It was not very hard when I look back at it, but at the time I did not know that I could do it. I lost 30 lbs pre-op and it seemed to shake my metabolism into lose weight mode, because I continued to lose weight rapidly post-op. Am 125 days post-op and lost 80 something pounds thus far, including the 30 pre-op. So, I believe what I do today, has a ripple effect in the days to come. I FEEL like a new person. If I did it, anyone can do it. I am looking forward to you sharing your journey on the blog. You can do it.
