    Default Wasn't the surgery I wanted......but

It wasn't the tummy tuck I've been wishing for....I had my gallbladder taken out yesterday after suffering excrutiating pain for weeks. The wheels of my healthcare system moves slow! I can tell you the gallbladder surgery was much more painful than my sleeve surgery! I feel like I've been run over by a truck. The surgeon used the same incisions that were from my sleeve, only a tiny bit larger, which is good. I didn't eat anything for 28 hours and the scale went up 8 lbs overnight, which baffles me, but I'm sure it's just fluids and gas. I wish you could have seen the eye rolls when asked who did my gastric sleeve and I told them I had it done in Mexico! My hubby, who works at the hospital, spoke up and said it was a disgrace to have to go to a foreign country to regain your health. You could've heard a pin drop. Our hospital has one of the best bariatric departments around, yet they don't cover it for their employees or family members.

Thank you to everyone who sent prayers and positive thoughts

I am so happy you posted. thank you. I had gall bladder surgery several years ago. Everyone told me that it was no big deal. One lady told me she was out shopping the same day of her gallbladder removal. Not me! I felt horrid for what seemed like quite a while. I was thinking if gall bladder surgery was so difficult for me that this sleeve thing was going to be horrendous. I'm glad to hear there is hope that it won't be so bad. It won't change my mind about having it, but it sounds better to think it won't be as bad as the gall of my gallbladder.

Congrats on your sleeve. Hope all is going well for you.

So glad this is over for you, must be a huge relief, if not comfortable nor what you wanted. At least it's not hanging over your head anymore.

Glad that it is over. Have a speedy recovery.

My husband works for a hospital also. I am lucky that their insurance covers WLS for their employees and family. The bariatric surgeons at the hospital should demand it be covered.

Glad surgery went OK. And it is disgraceful that any insurance, especially one at a medical facility, would exempt any sort of medically necessary procedure. I'm sure the bariatric department folks can testify that WLS is beneficial and necessary.

Question though: I was put or ursodiol for six months post surgery, which is meant to prevent gallbladder issues due to rapid weight loss. Is this not something that those who went to Mexico were instructed to follow up with their primary doctors?

Hurray for your husband. I am a nurse at a hospital and our insurance doesn't cover bariatric surgery.

I followed up with my PCP and she did the routine blood tests but never mentioned the meds to prevent gallstones. I wish I had known, but I believe I had them prior to my sleeve surgery and they just got worse.

I agree that it is a disgrace that our insurance companies would rather pay for ongoing illnesses due to obesity rather than pay for getting healthy! And our insurance is not cheap.

My surgeon requires more extensive blood work post-op to make sure that we are not suffering from any vitamin deficiencies.

My doctor does too, I just went in July for my one year check up. I am deficient in vitamin K and my cholesterol was a bit high. I looked up vitamin K online, says I should eat more leafy greens. I've lost another eleven pounds since then so I'm hoping my LDL has gone down.

I don't understand why the insurance companies give folks hard times about WLS when the surgery enables you to be able to get off so many meds...unless of course that's it in a nut shell....if they can fix it where WLS is too expensive for the average person to afford, then they can keep us overweight, diabetic, on cpap machines, fluid pills, heart pills, asthma meds, acid reflux pills and on and on.... keeps the doctors in business a lot longer than when you lose weight and get off all of it.

I'm a great example! The only medical problem I now have is dealing with acid reflux, I found the cuprit to be sugar! Now that I cut it out of my diet, my stall has left and so has the acid reflux. But I also haven't seen my doctor for anything except Xanax! I haven't found anything, even weight loss, to keep my nerves from getting to me.

So my doc loses the money he got from the insurance company for, my fluid pills I no longer take, plus the office visit to get them, my asthma meds, the inhalers and steroids, the cpap machine I rented, then the bypap, the tubes and hoses, not to mention the sleep studies required for me to rent the machines, the countless allergy meds I no longer need....hmmmm it adds up....if we don't need any medical care after WLS....we may eventually not need insurance! Just sayin!

I had extensive blood work done last month and everthing was perfect except my cholesterol is slightly elevated. Hopefully I will be able to get it in the normal range with healthy eating. All my vitamin levels were great. Now that the evil gallbladder is gone, I'll be able to get back in the swing of things.

Hooray for your husband! I bet you could hear crickets after his comment!

I had my gall bladder out 3 years before I had the sleeve, and I agree--it was ROUGH! I have a high pain tolerance, and I was wiped out for the first week, and woozy for a week after that. The sleeve was easy-peasy!! 12 hours of hell following surgery, then nothing but blue skies!

Hope you are feeling better soon!
