Default A little confused about eating...pureed vs not

I'm really confused. My diet is supposed to be 2 weeks full liquid post op. then 2 weeks puréed after that. Then soft foods for 2 weeks and then try new things as I feel I can. So here's my question - my puréed stage says "applesauce consistency " but it also talks about eggs and soft meats like some seafood. Am I supposed to blend those foods up? I have eaten scrambled eggs and snow crab meat and half a crab cake. Obviously those are all separate meals at different times/days. But I didn't chop any of it. I just took small bites and chewed well and had no issues with it going down- either at the hernia repair site I have or in my sleeve. but I took a few bites of soft cheese that I melted in the oven today- lower fat Swiss - and it made me feel nauseated. I tried chopping up pasta but that made me feel sick and didn't go down well. So I guess I'm either trying to advance my diet too fast or certain foods aren't agreeing with me. But should I be blending up eggs and crab meat if I am tolerating it ok as it is without blending? Am I risking dis tending my sleeve or popping staples? I'm 15 days post op. any advice? I know everyone's dr seems to have different rules - So I'm wondering if I can tolerate things not puréed is it ok to eat them? Thanks.

    Hi there,
I am 10 days post op and had the same concerns... Because I was told I could eat applesauce consistency in stage 1, and my list in stage 1 has also included cream of wheat (watery). I was given custard in the hospital day 1! I did not eat it...i have been getting protein in through non fat greek yogurt and my shakes...I also eat low fat soups strained which go down nicely. I am keeping to most of what nutritionist says but if I feel i can tolerate something i just puree the hell out of it and proceed with caution. Good luck!

its all trial and error, each person will respond differently at different times. If you chew your food like crazy you are basically making it puree in your mouth and should go down fine.

During my pureed stage I blended down my food to baby food consistency. A roast dinner is nice blended down.x

I pureed my tuna & chicken (canned), & hard boiled eggs than added mayo w/olive oil. They all went down very smoothly. You want to stay away from foods than can swell in your tummy like breads and pasta's. When you do try bread it should be toasted to start with.

I would say be careful at this stage. Just because you CAN eat something doesn't mean you SHOULD. You are at risk for a leak until 6 weeks out so you should be carefuly to follow your docs orders even if you feel like you could speed it up.

I blended almost everything, or at least smashed finely.
I did not do it with scrambled eggs. However chew as much as possible anyway

A $10 mini food chopper is your best friend right now. Just cook whatever and put it through the processor. Do avoid pasta! It will swell, and is just plain not good anyway, empty calories. Canned chicken, seafood, whatever "ground" up with something to make it wet. I liked/like canned chicken with some ranch dressing or salsa. You won't eat like this forever but for now it's smart to do.

Thank you for responses. I have only tried pasta once and it didnt go down well for me. I also tried soft low fat cheese melted and cooled and it made me feel sick after it hit my stomach. My hernia repair area is opening up because Im not having that 'stuck' feeling when drinking liquid (i had that stuck feeling even with water). Right now im eating tuna - small bites and chewing as best as I can (egg whites, relish, mayo and mustard added). Im eating crab leg meat with low fat butter. I ate a crab cake (half for dinner, half for lunch). And all went down well. Rest of the day is shakes. I would rather eat shakes at this point than puree something to almost liquid and have it taste horrible. things Ive tried to puree have tasted really yuck to me in that form. Pureed stage has to be the hardest.
