Question Unable to eat or drink - any advice

    Hi All,
I am trying anyplace I can to find out if anyone has experienced this problem. My sister and I both had the gastric sleeve done on Feb 28, 2011. I am doing fine but my sister is not. She did great the first week. On the 8th day she started getting sick when she tried to sip the protein shake and would dry heave or vomit. She went to the doctor and was severely dehydrated with serious low blood pressure and potassium and acute kidney failure.

She was in hospital for 7 days and then released. For the next 3 weeks she was back in the ER every 2-4 days to get IV for fluids because she vomits even if she takes a small sip of water or other fluids. She is now back in hospital. They have done a CT scan, upper GI, and x-rays to confirm there are no tears in the stomach, no blockages in stomach intestines, no tumors, no stomach motility issues. The doctors don't know what to do and are talking about sending her home with a PICC line so she can get some fluids and nutrition.

I just watched Oprah's "where are they now show" and the guest Jill Roberts said she had gastric bypass and four years later went through a year of not being able to eat and had 12 surgeries, but they didn't give any more details of what it was due to and how they ended up solving the problem.

Has anyone had this same situation or know anyone who has that can give us some ideas of what is causing this?

    Please help!
    Thank you,
    Tina

I am so sorry for her trouble... I have heard of complications like that further out but not within 6 weeks.. has she eaten anything that may not be on the list , like coconut or veggies with string like celery or esparagaus ?? a friend of mine ate I think alot of celery or something undigestable at one sitting and developed a bezore...(sp).. Or could it be a stricture ? I hope you have access to the same surgeon that did the sleeve. I know there are alot of areas that don't provide this surgery and many patients opt to leave the area for it.. please let us knpow how she is making out...

My sibling (three weeks after surgery) is having the same problem as your sister. Everything comes back up and there is a complete inability to eat or drink. In fact, more is comming back up then went in. There has already been one hospital stay of 5 days, same thing as your sister, the Dr's could not find anything wrong. How did things ease up for your sister? Please let me know, I want to help and can't do anything!

I had a problem similar to this but not as serious. I had a stricture and it had to be stretched with a balloon while they did the endoscopy, it took them doing it twice before I was able to eat again.

Thanks, I will suggest a balloon endoscopy to the doctor. My sibling is still having problems. Any other advice you or anyone can give is appreciated. There is ,pain like a bubble is stopping everything from going down. Very little liquid and no food has stayed down. By food I mean clear broth or juice.

I am worried about the stricture possibility for her as well. That could be it. I think the balloon endoscopy is a fantastic idea!! Also, is she having possible reflux? If it's severe reflux, it's hard to keep anything down. Has she tried taking a PPI like prilosec or nexium? I hope you guys figure it out! That is awful!

My sibling is vomiting up a liquid that has the look of Pepsi with water in it. There are also brown or green flecks. As I said, there has been one hospitalization already and we are about to go again. What is this the doc says there is no obstruction. That cannot be right.

Thanks for your concern. Sorry for the delay. Unfortunately nothing has changed. Almost 5 weeks after surgery my sibling cannot eat or drink, and is currently getting nutrition through a PIK line. The doc says nothing is wrong, but this certainly was never discussed before surgery (and we did ask about complications). Feeling very mislead and concerned.

Has your daughter gotten well? My mother is experiencing a similar issue. Had the GS done on Oct. 1, 2012 and have been hospitalized 4 times for dehydration, low potassium and vomiting. She's also had a PICC line 2x. I'm trying to find something she can drink. She complains about a low tolerance to water and mostly all drinks being to sweet. Please provide me some insight on your daughters status.

You do realize that this thread is almost 2 years old, don't you?

You might want to have your mother drink some herbal tea. That's how I get my fluids in now.
