    Default IVC Filter?

I actually forgot to mention this in my introduction post. Has anyone had any experience with the IVC filter. My doctor recommended I have the filter placed before my surgery. It added on another element of nervousness to the whole process. It's a filter that blocks blood-clots I know that, and usually people who have had clots before are recommend to get them before a surgery (which I've never had).

I was just wondering did anyone else have to get the filter, and what was the procedure like as far as time/pain etc. I did do a little research on it, but it's always good to hear it directly from a patient.

I am a cardiology nurse and have never heard of a doc recommending this unless you were not a candidate for the blood thinners post op or a family history of clotting issues.. The procedure is simple enough and can be done in the OR or interventional radiology and they put a catheter in your groin or upper chest or arm vein and thread the filter in the inferior vena cava. Patients are up after an hour or two and go home the same day... Hope this helps

I haven't had this done yet, but my dr. also recommends the ivc filter. I've never had a blood clot. He said that he wants to do it just to be safe because of my size. That after the surgery i might not be up and moving soon enough to prevent clots. I go to see the cardio vas. doctor on Aug. 7th and he will make the final decision. At first when i heard about this and read stuff on internet i was worried but after talking to alot of nurses i know, it seems pretty safe to do.

I had my final pre-op visit today with my surgeon and I asked if this was absolutely necessary and she said not exactly. She is going to allow me to take the lovenox shots for a few week myself via injections after surgery to avoid the risks of blood clots as much as possible (as well as in the hospital). The IVC was an extra measure of precaution, but she actually said she doesn't even really like the filters after seeing them in patients.
