Red face Protein shake & diet question post op

I am looking for some advice and/or suggestions on diet post op. I just had my education class in the program that I am in, and they gave us some really good information (albeit, alot!) and some samples of protein powders and chewable vitamins.

I am a little confused about diet after surgery once you are off the full liquid diet. I will be having the gastric sleeve hopefully sometime before this year is out. All of the materials talk about protein, protein and more protein but I am unsure of how the protein drinks fit in....do they go as a food replacement or do you sip them during the day like you would be with water?

I think diet is one of the big things that I have been so anxious and worried about. Pre-op I have been following the choosemyplate.org diet as directed by my program and have that down pretty well. I am already down 8lbs towards the 15lbs that I need to lose before surgery.

Thank you for any help you can give!

before and after your surgery you will be on liquids only for some time. Broth, protein shakes, jello, popsicles will be your friends. Protein is your most important thing. Protein shakes are important, clear liquid proteins such as Isopure are important and no these aren't an accompaniment to your food, there is no chewable food during liquid diet phases. You will have to get so much protein and just plain liquids such as water and crystal light in after surgery your tummy being so small cannot actually fit it all so you have to sip on something throughout the day to meet your protein and liquid requirements. There's no 3 meals a day, its just as much sipping as you can handle all day.

They will give you a sample menu after surgery that will explain it better. I folllowed it exactly how they had it...even nap time!

Protein shakes are awesome as a first meal in the morning. I take my supplements with my shake and when your body gets protein first thing it runs more efficiently, great way to start your day. If you work out or exercise, have a shake after your work out to feed your muscles also, and you will be well on your way to hitting your protein for the day.

The shakes are usually used as one of the 5-6 meals you will be eating daily.

Find a shake that you really like the taste! I went through 8-10 different protein powders before I found the one I liked! Try to buy sample packets, that way you don't buy a whole can and it goes to waste if you don't like it. Like John, shakes help me get my day started!

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. I am just trying to wrap my head around how it's going to be once I am off the liquid diet. The Dr's Office gave me a ton of Unjury samples of protein powder that I am going to try and see how they taste beforehand. I really like all of the options that Unjury offers.
