    Default How many calories?

I was just curious how many calories you were advised to eat after surgery. I was never given a number post op. I'm 23 days post op. I've been eating about 1000 a day and my protein is between 75-80 grams. 320 of my calories are from my protein bar with has 32 grams of protein. Do you think I should count my protein bar as a meal instead of a snack? I can't finish it all at once, I have to spread it out throughout the day. If I lower to 800 calories would I have more weight loss? I'm also working out on the elliptical 20-30 minutes at least 5 days a week. Advice would be appreciated

For my first month my surgeon (and insurance, since we go through classes) advised 400-600 calories a day, 60-80g protein a day. If you're not sure, you can always call your surgeon and ask.

My surgeon said that there is no minimum number of calories at this point. That my stomach really doesn't have the capacity for too much right now. I am also told to only eat 3 meals a day, preferably no snacking, but one snack is okay, just make it a good healthy choice. I considered protein bars, but all the ones I found had way too many carbs in them.... did you find one that is low? If it has more than 5g, it's probably not a good idea. I do know that 800 is a good goal for calories to get a decent loss. Good luck

I rechecked my calories. I am only eating between 700-800 a day. The thing that may have been hurting me were my protein bars. Let's just say that they are gone....back to the shakes :-(

Hmmmmm. Ive never counted anything! I know, though I would not have been able to ever drink 4 shakes a day. Couldnt even do it now! You should be eating food by now. Like cottage cheese, pudding, yogurt. You can mix pudding or yogurt with the protein powder, add some fresh blended strawberries, blueberries-yummy! Canned chicken finely chopped with a little mayo. So many more things with protein than just shakes. Experiment! Be creative!!

It's really individual but I'm 10 months out and still don't eat 1000 cal most days. I'm one of the unlucky ones who needs to watch my carbs all the time, so I keep it under 40 carbs max and usually more like 25. Protein I need 80 absolute minimum. Most days I get 100. For whatever reason even the so called sugar alcohol carbs matter to my body. If I eat them I don't drop weight. I rely on food protein and liquid protein shots (proasis) on the days I can't get food down.
    Today I had:
bfst 3 oz chicken with ranch dressing
lunch 4 strips of microwave bacon (don't try this til a few months out) and a tube of proasis in water to drink in the afternoon
dinner 4 oz cube steak with mushrooms
snack 2.5 oz canned chicken with olive oil mayo split up morning and afternoon
My fitness pal says I got 700 calories, 94 gms of protein, 9 carbs and 54 gms of fat.
This was one of my low low carb days. I carb cycle....
For my 700 calories I am very full!
You can't eat this kind of food yet but pointing out there is more than smoothies out there, as Christy stated.
At your stage I was eating a lot of greek yogurt and canned chicken with mayo or ranch dressing.
Oh and I don't know about others but I never eat after 6 pm at night. I awake at 4:30 am. I try to give my body a good 10 hrs of nothing but water to give it a chance to work on eating fat
