Default When I wake up from Gastric Sleeve Surgery will I have a tube in my mouth?

This question was asked in our FAQ:

When I wake up from Gastric Sleeve Surgery will I have a tube in my mouth?

Since I was not sleeved and I really don't know the answer to this, could someone please write a nice response so that I can let the person know the answer (and I'll also put the answer in the FAQ). Thanks in advance.

I didn't, so I presume you won't, but if you are worried ask your surgeon.

Good advice from kellyifrah to ask the surgeon. You should check with surgeon for any issues which worry you. I didn't have a tube when I woke up. I believe they remove it while you're still under.

    cheers

No tube for me either...but I definitely had one during the surgery, because my throat/neck was all bruised.

Normally you won't wake up with a tube but if there were any problems during surgery you might have an NG tube.

I believe they take it out when you are still under. They did that for me. I just had the oxygen tubes in my nose when I woke up.

I specifically told the surgeon and anesthesiologist that I did NOT want to wake up that way as it happened to me once 20 yrs ago and in my foggy state I got real aggressive trying to remove it myself and it was a traumatic experience.

They made sure to bring me around slowly enough that it had time to complete its purpose before I was awake.

I didn't either, I did have a mask on, which was pinching my nose and I was having a hard time breathing. I of course was too groggy to know any better and I tried pulling it off to which the nurse responded by putting the oxygen tube in my nose, which I was quite happy with and stopped fussing about.

It was my first time being properly "under" and I do have to say it was the freakiest thing in my life. Being wide awake one second, with the anesthesiologist telling me that "this injection will start to put you under..." fade to black and then what seemed like a second later, four or five women standing around me yelling my name and telling me to wake up and shaking me.
