Default 4 months out, extremely BAD hair loss!

I'm about 4 months out from surgery, and I started with hair so thick and curly that I could hide a cat in it.. but now, my hair has halved in size.

The past 5 times I washed my hair, an entire handful of hair has come out. It falls out when I brush it, when I touch it, and even when I'm not touching it! It is soooo much thinner, I HATE IT.

PLEASE, what are some things I can do to at least slow it down? Even crazy things .. I'm willing to try anything at this point! 15 year olds don't lose hair, so it's even more noticeable !

I'm not 15 - I'm 64 - but I also have lost hair. Saw a dermatologist a couple of weeks ago. Hair loss can be caused by thyroid problems, low iron, high testosterone, etc. etc. etc. Find a doctor and get the blood work done. My iron was OK, my thyroid was OK, but my testosterone was sky high so am on medication for that. Also take Biotin. I take 5000 mcg. per day. Doctor said it won't stop the hair from falling out but the new hair coming in will have a thicker shaft and will eventually be stronger and fuller as it grows in. Also "surgery shock" can cause hair loss and that part should pass after several months according to the doctor. Just be sure to get your iron and keep up the protein intake and treat your hair gently...use good products on it...gentle shampoo, good conditioner and not too much back combing or hot iron/hot curlers, etc. And then just remember...this too shall pass!

The bariatric nurse that taught my pre-surgery class had the same problem when she had gastric bypass two years ago. She takes a vitamin called Biotin. It is supposed to help with hair loss & makes your nails stronger. Not sure if it works but she has plenty of hair now so something worked. You might want to talk to your nutritionist at your surgeon's office and get their advice.

I too, take biotin every day. Low iron is also a possibility. I agree, have blood drawn and check those things. My iron level was so low the saturation was undetectable. My hair fell out in the handfuls!! Then I needed iron infusions, that was before surgery. Now, i take iron 2x per day and biotin in the morning. I also use gentle products and stay away from straighteners and excessive hair drying. Good luck!! It will pass!!

Go to a salon. There are some salon shampoos and things that will also help. I also take Biotin 5,000 a day. I am losing hair, but it is not extreme. It will slow down in a couple months, and it will grow back. Best of luck to you.

My hair loss has slowed a little. I still lose it, but over the course of the last month it's really slowed down. I'm also the only one who notices it. I said something to a friend of mine about losing so much hair last week and she commented about how thick and full my hair is. I kind of laughed at her and said she didn't have to say that just to be nice. ...she wasn't. She really hadn't noticed it even though to me it seems like a TON and like my hair is WAY thinner. It sucks in the short-term, but keep working on your vitamins, protein, and biotin and you will be fine. The loss will stop and you'll be fine.

I haven't notice any hair loss yet. KNOCK ON WOOD. It seems to be the luck of the draw? I am not as good about my protein as I should be, but I take a multi form whole food sources, biotin, and B12 every day. I have extremely baby fine hair as is, so if I start losing it, I'm pretty much screwed.

I had quite a bit of hair loss too. As soon as I could, I started taking over the counter prenatal vitamins. They are higher in biotin and iron (i was anemic so i needed the iron) My hair loss stopped in about 4 weeks. Also make sure you are getting your protein in! Hang in there!

Kendra makes a thicken foam to make your hair look and feel thicker and a shampoo and conditioner. I love it.

The hair loss cannot be prevented by use of hair products, but they might make it look fuller while you are awaiting regrowth.

Many people lose hair 3-4 months after surgery due to the after effect of the surgery. It is happening to me right now too! I started out with a ridiculous amount of hair, so far it doesn't look thin, but my gosh i am loosing alot!

Nutritionally, iron and protein seem to be the main things to make sure you are not deficient in. My understanding is that biotin can help with the regrowth but does NOT prevent hair loss caused by the surgery itself.

I guess the good news is that as long as your nutrition is good, the losses should stop and new hair will grow back.

one of our support group ladies who's more than a yr out recommends Black Current seed oil - these are capsules and you take one a day for thinning hair. Dr Oz also recommends these and Primrose oil. Google these two items and see what they are all about and where to buy it! My surgeon and dietician say it takes up to 2 years for hair loss to stop. Good luck!
