O.k I want to know is it just me but I have 30 days left before surgery and I want to eat all the things I feel Im going to miss I have gained 2 pounds :/
My doctor didn't put me on a pre-op diet at all so I was free to eat whatever I wanted up until the day before surgery. I ate everything I knew I wasn't going to eat again or at least for a while. I gained 6lbs the month before my surgery. My doctor even laughed about it.
I had the same feelings and thoughts.....I think its natural for all of us. I would try and tell myself that one day I will be able to have a bite or two of whatever it was that I was fixating on. However, there were a couple of times that I did break down and ate what it was. During the 2 weeks pre-op, I had pizza once and buffalo wings once. I just stuck to the plan every other time and did alright in the end. Thats how I plan on working my sleeve once I can have solid foods again. Not deprivation but portion control and a treat every now and then.
Very common ... my surgeon and his staff often refer to this as 'Last Supper syndrome'. I snuck several foods down the stretch of my pre-surgery liquid diet for this very reason. Just try the best you can to focus on this. You will be able to eat just about anything after surgery (well 6 weeks after or so anyway) that you eat today ... you just won't be able to each much of it at one time ... but you won't care, because you will fill up quickly. I think you may find your tastes change too. I rarely ate fish before my surgery, unless it was a classic Wisconsin Fish Fry with all you can eat deep fried Beer Battered Fish and all kinds of other 'all you can eat' sides. Now I eat 3-4 ozs of fresh pan seared fish just about every day ... and I look forward to every single meal. And I NEVER walk away hungry ... or stuffed. I walk away satisfied. I haven't had a hamburger since 4 weeks before my surgery (12/12/11) and could careless if I had another one ... if you had told me that before surgery I'm not sure I would have believed you. I miss two things ... and that is about all ... I miss having a beer every now and then (especially when I'm watching a sporting event on TV or in person)... and I miss having an ice cold Coke when I'm hot and sweaty from working outside all day. And I truly believe that the only reason I miss them, is because I can't have them. Keep reminding yourself you aren't losing these foods, you're just redefining your relationship with them. Maybe it will make it easier to pass on some things during the pre-surgery phase.
My surgery is in two weeks...I set my surgery date back at the first of March. Since than I have gained 14lbs. I have also started the 14 day pre-op diet and have already lost 3 lbs...not worried about it. Just like TD said...you will have that "LAST SUPPER" feeling...and that is normal. The biggest thing is to make sure you lose it before surgery...because the more weight you lose before surgery the easier surgery is and the nicer your body is to you. (or so I have heard). I am still so excited about it having this surgery. i cannot wait. Good luck to you Jeanette
My nutritionist called it 'saying your goodbyes to food' and that was so true for me! I had KFC fried chicken, falafels, double cheeseburgers with bacon, fries, pizza, everything you can think of, lol. I think doing so made me gain about 3kgs, true, but I feel better now and knowing that I could never eat like that is kind of comforting in a way, lol. Does that make sense?
OMG, I think my husband is more concerned about what he thinks I will never get to eat again, LOL. He said all weekend, you better eat what you want now. I am more concerned with tomorrow and getting out of the hospital as fast as I can. AND, yes I went through the same phase a week ago and was freaking out about gaining the weight. My surgeon said to NOT gain any weight. So I went on a 3 day liquid protein diet and when I checked in with him, I had lost a pound. Good luck and be mindful, as we all tend to lose it when it comes to food.
