My doctor told me that there's no malabsorbtion with a sleeve and there is no vitamin deficiency issues, i.e there is no need to take these kinds of suppliments at all if you have a good diet. are u refering to by-pass? I have had a sleeve and have absolutely no issues with vitamin absorbtion etc.. just water consumption is always difficult still!

My surgeon said the same, re: malabsorption. However, according to my nutritionist, some surgeons prefer to keep both their bypass and sleeve patients on the same regimen for the first year post op ... and it certainly doesn't hurt to take the extra vitamins.

I take a chewable multivitamin, a chewable aspirin (had a heart attack, don't want another), a vitamin bComplex (the multivitamin I chose doesn't have enough folic acid) and an iron supplement.

I take 10,000 IU Vit D daily (am deficiant), multi, 1500 calcium, 1000 b-12 daily(am deficiant), and will start on b complex and iron later. I am going to the doctor later bc I crave crushed ice and red meat, both a sign of low iron.

Hi, It is true about the malabsorption not being much of an issue with the sleeve but you do need to take supplements. One multi vit, calcium, B complex and D and if you menstruate then iron. Pretty much the same supplements they recommend for everyone. The problem with deficiencies comes from not getting enough from what little food you eat especially early on. I had no issues myself was taking my supplements then when I was 5 1/2 months out I was out of town for two weeks. I didn't take them those two weeks nut didn't work out so I figured it would be a push. Well when I went in for my 6 month blood draw I had deficiencies. So needless to say I am a big proponent to taking them. If it is the taste of that is bothering you I take regular ones now and swallow them without any problems.

See this is why I don't like taking calcium. The following actually happened to me pre=op..... I had two bouts 15 months apart with inflamation around my appendix and ended up in the hospital for the first one. They thought it was my appendix, but my white blood cell count wasn't low so the surgeon wanted to wait. The pain ended up subsiding and I was ok. I stopped taking calcium and then when it happened again I was taking calcium again.

That's what I take...it works...and I don't have to choke down another pill or make an appointment with the doctor each month!

There may be no issues with malabsorption like other weight loss surgeries but we are on a low carb diet for the rest of our lives. We are supposed to start each meal eating protein first and then eating vegetables later on. The nutrients in foods like meat are not the same as what you'd get in a lot of vegetables. I know I barely eat any veggies with a lot of meals and for me a multivitamin is crucial. On top of that they give me a lot of energy, help my skin and make my nails and hair grow like crazy!

Taking calcium contributes to kidney stones, it's true ... but you can develop them regardless of whether you take the supplement or not ... Don't let a fear of kidney stones prevent you from doing something that your body needs for so much more.

A hot pad, plenty of fluids and 800mg of ibuprofen can kick a kidney stone out fairly quickly (I know, I've passed almost 100 of them ... I have a genetic kidney disease that causes them to form)

I had blood test run recently and they all came back very strong. I am very religious about taking my vitamins.

I HATE chewable vitamins so I found 1st step for energy liquid multivitamin...it is citrus flavored. Its really yummy when you stick it in the fridge and drink it first thing in the morning.

I have a liver disease called PBC (Primary Biliary Cirrhosis) so I already have to take certain vitamins and avoid others...ie iron, copper cuz my body cannot break them down. When I do get to have my surgery I will have to go over all that with the NUT to see what else I need to take.

Passed personel goal weight of 135 in 9 months! Wow!

I know that my Doctor requires vitamins and supplements after surgery as well. I will be going to Nutriental classes soon and pre-op classes to explain the surgery and after. I have MS so I am already on multi vitamins and a few supplements. i take the biotin for my hair loss but I will have a different set up because I can not over stimulate my immune system or I will end up having a exacerbation (attack/replase) of my MS. As soon as I find out the regime I will let you all know. Good luck
