I have checked with many doctors and people who had the gastric sleeve here in the Middle East and if you eat correctly there is no need for vitamines.
One doctor even told me that in US, doctors offer vitamines to sell these only.
The vitamines are necessary when you have the bypass not when part of your stomach has been removed.
Anyway, I just wanted to mention that.
Surgeon here are mainly from Europe and the idea of vitamins is not necessary when you have a variety of food like fish, vegetables, fruits,....

    take care.

It's been interesting reading the different recommendations patients have had regarding post op. vitamins. We as sleevers have researched most aspects of our new lives and vitamin intake I think is one which is important for long term health. B12 levels do not drop suddenly. All I can suggest is you have your blood levels checked regularly - say 6 or 12 monthly - just in case.

I started taking serious vitamins today. I was taking the Flinstones but my doctor told me when I was 2 months post-op to start the adult ones and I did because the hair is coming off with my hair brush in clumps so I started 1 woman's day w/iron/ 2 calcium a day/ plus 1 B-12. I'll see if that helps.
I couldn't imagine not taking something because some days you eat more than others and some days hardly anything. Vitamins cover what you're missing.
I would not go without them for long extended periods of time. Lorna

Sorry to sound pedantic, but treatment is regular injections of B12 - much easier to swallow a tablet.

i was told in my first meeting that the only people that have to take multivitamins for life were those going tru gastric bypass

My nutritionist told me to start on vitamins one week after surgery. Here is the recommendation:

2x adult chewable multivitamin w/iron (Iron needs for women are 30mg per day, and the regular multivitamins only have 15 or 18mg)
1x Sublingual B12 (melts on or under the tongue...no chewing required). B12 gets all used up when your body is under stress, and not even counting the stress of surgery, a new diet, a new exercise program, we ALL have lots of stress in our daily lives.
1x Biotin (it's not a chewable, but I chew it up anyway, tastes chalky...but it does come in a chewable or a liquid, so I think I'll buy that the next time). Biotin helps prevent hair loss and promotes metabolism.
2x Tums Calcium carbonate (Bypass patients have to have calcium citrate instead). And yes, I take my Tums at bedtime and the other vitamins in the middle of the day.

Not required by nutritionist, but I also take (and nutritionist has approved):
1x chewable vitamin C, when I take my multivitamins...because C helps with absorption of iron and is a powerful anti-oxidant; you can never take too much.
2 Tblsps Liquid Glucosamine+Chondroitin to help with my joints and bones

I have also heard that Silica helps prevent hair loss; it is beneficial to hair, nails, and bones. So at my one-month check up, I'm going to ask the nutritionist if I can start taking that again. I was taking it the six weeks prior to my surgery and would be taking it now, except the tablets are capsule shaped. So I may need to crush them or cut them in half.

Before surgery, I was also taking fish oil capsules. The nutritionist wants me to wait until six weeks post-surgery to start those up again. I just don't eat enough fish in my diet, but who knows? Maybe now that my life is changing and I can't eat as much beef and pork, I'll be eating more fish. I'm planning to try.
    Diane

    Hi Nanaangie,

Milk thistle helps the liver regenerate. Our liver takes a bit of a battering from the operation and milk thistle helps to protect it and help it recover.

For any wound to heal, you need protein and vitamin C. Since I get my protein thru shakes, I take 100mg chewable Vitamin C daily as well. I was also told that I would need 500mg of Calcium two times daily. My MD said I would have to take a multivitamin and Calcium for the rest of my life. A friend had mentioned that she had to take Biotin as well to keep her hair from falling out. Luckily, most good mulitivitamins have this as an ingredient.

I was advised ( here in the UK) that supplements should not be necessary if my diet is good. I was told that, since the sleeve procedure is not particularily malabsorptive (unlike the bypass) that we should be able to retain our vitamins and minerals. I was told that a multivitamin wouldn't hurt. Of course, in the UK we have the NHS and so the doctors aren't really caring about selling supplements to us. I guess if my bloods come back deficient then I will take some extras xxxx
