I take b12 sublingually 3x weekly as instructed and have plenty of energy, doing fine.
I take two "mega men's" multi-vitamins from GNC along with a D3 pill, and a 1500 mcg b12 capsule daily. I take them all upon awakening.

OK, I know I take too many vitamins / supplements, but I can't help myself. I take:
Gummy vitamin -- because I bought them and didn't know they were kind of crappy, so I use them as a supplement
Theragran-M multi-vitamin -- a high quality multi-vite from Walgreens
Tums -- for cheap calcium and because, like many of us, I have an acid stomach
Resveratrol -- I'm a huge fan of anti-oxidants and this is supposed to help with heart health as well
Alpha Lipoic Acid -- another antioxidant, helps keep triglycerides lower and lower blood sugar levels
Biotin -- I take a sub-lingual Biotin and a capsule
B12 -- I take daily sub-lingual B12
Fish Oil -- I take Barlean's Fresh Catch Fish Oil, it's a liquid and you have to keep it refrigerated. It has a tremendous amount more of Omega 3's per serving than capsules and is pretty good tasting. Huge EPA/DHA numbers.
Flax Seed Oil -- I take 2 capsules of flax seed oil, it helps moisturize my skin which had been drying out after surgery
Fiber Gummy -- they are delicious and get me fiber
Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM/Vitamin D/Hyaluronic acid -- all in one pill (take 2 per day), helps with joint health
Yes, indeed, I take too much. But it's not hurting anything and most are probably helping.
Hi gal
What is a high quality multivitamin? Can you give me a brand you like? I just had my surgery 3 weeks ago and haven't started on vitamins
Was just getting ready to ask if anyone takes B-12 vitamins, even did a search and nothing came up, but saw this sticky about vitamins and here you are.
My husband has been having a rough time, no appetite, losing too much. We are going to double up on his Nexium again, should have never stopped it, so hoping that will help his stomach gas issues. He hasn't eaten in 3 days, going to many dr's, but anyways, back at our PCP this morning and since the surgeon ordered blood work Wednesday to look at his B-12 levels, etc, our PCP gave my husband a b-12 shot today. What a perk up!! He actually came home and drank 1/2 cup of chicken broth!! I will be going back further and reading on this thread, looking to see if others take the shots or just the pills? Wish we had looked into this earlier. Trying to stay optimistic!!
lweeny, a high-quality multi-vitamin is one that is going to have a full compliment of vitamins and minerals to give you a full range of nutritional supplements in light of your low caloric intake. Gummy vites don't have most of the minerals you need, and some of the chewy ones don't as well. Centrum Adult is a good example of a high quality vitamin. Make sure they have enough Iron!
this has been the hardest of all for me, as much as i follow the diet i can not force myself to take those vitamins every day! i have always had trouble taking vitamins, they tend to make me sick to my stomach. I am working on it but i wished i could just take one pill a day and be done with it.
For those who get sick from vitamins, try taking them at night before you go to bed. You'll sleep through the nausea and won't even know it happened in the morning.
I take 4 Optifast chewable, 1 500 mg Viactiv Calcium chew, 1 5000 IU Vit D and 1 Iron + Vit C chewable a day. My docs advise the specialized Bariatric vitamin because there's not enough of specific minerals in regular adult multivitamins. Its good to have blood work done every so often to check your levels because if you can get everything from food, you wont need the supplements. Vit B12 is one that Bari's need a really high concentration of because its so poorly absorbed in the body. And you can't take calcium within 2 hours of taking Iron, because the iron interferes with the absorption of the calcium.
Something to keep in mind if your vitamins make you nauseous, Bari vitamins are super concentrated. Try cutting them in half, try another brand (I tried 3 different ones before I found the Optifast brand) or try a liquid version. Taking more throughout the day is annoying, but its better than being sick or feeling like your going to be sick.
