I have heard that B12 doesn't get absorbed post bariatric surgery so there is no point in taking tablets of it. However, taking B12 as an injection once every 3 months is mostly advised by the surgeon. Though, I am not sure for how long wills this injection goes on, but it may be for life long by changing the duration.

B12 must be taken either sublingual or via a shot. i have been doing sublingual and my levels are great.

Iron is often best taken separately because it won't absorb well if taken with calcium. I took it post surgery, but my bloodwork has shown me a-okay on iron, so I don't continue taking it.

Do what your surgeon says, but in general, taking gummy vites and cheap calcium is not sufficient. High quality complete multivitamins AND calcium citrate are really crtical to your long term health.

The trouble with calcium carbonate is it just isn't that digestable/useable. I understand that it really only works taken with food and I don't know about you, but calcium pills are practically a meal for me. I don't think there is any harm taking them together, but you get alot of binders and not alot of calcium metabolized in your system with the carbonate. Sadly, you won't know you have a big problem till way down the road when you start getting brittle bones.... the decision i have made on this one is to follow the NUT/surgeon recommendations and take the citrate 3x a day - although I hate it.

chewable multi, b12, calcium with d, Biatin (think spelling) which is a hair, nail, skin vitamin. and tested by bloodwork to check levels every three months.

I must admit I am terrible at remembering to take my vitamins. I have them all next to my coffee pot for in the morning but I still manage to forget. I'm only 4 months out, so haven't got the hair loss yet, but I know it may catch up with me soon.

The human hair is made up of protein. The loss of hair is probably due to a protein defficiency. When I started the pre-op portion of my diet (1 month of liquids), the main source of protein was whey protein. The dietician I see said that the ideal portion for this procedure was 60 grams of protein daily. The knowledge of the possible protein deficit problems were explained quite boldly. If you are on a excercise program you will obviously want to increase the protein intake to help the muscles recover and provide extra kick power for those intense workouts. Also after my sleeve I noticed i had a hard time with milk digestion. This was not lactose intolerance but just the milk fat was a harder to digest. So use 1/2% milk or water for the mix. I take viactiv, chewable multivitamin for women. My doctor also told me that I do not need to take anything extra and everyone (sleeve or not) is better off taking a multivitamin daily. I am now one year post op and about to do a mommy makeover. The plastic surgeons also recommend a multivitamin before and after the surgery so I said I have been on one since my sleeve so I am good. And my blood work always comes back good. Once I had low folic acid and had to take that for a short time soon after my sleeve but it seems to be okay now and I do not take anything else. And I do not eat a lot. I do not eat meat and my doctors say I have no need for protein shakes and stuff so I am happy and healthy!

B-12 comes in liquid drop form, at Walgreens, etc... not too much... drip it in your beverage... each day.

I take 2 children's (Flintstones) chewable multi-vitamins each day
1 Calcitrate 2 x a day
500 mg of sublingual B12 2 x a day (have taken regularly since back surgery to help repair nerve damage) - this will be increasing to 5,000 mg 1 x day once I finish the current bottle
250 mg of magnesium 2 x a day (I've had deficiency in the past)
1,000 mg of vitamin D (gummy) 2 x day (I've always taken extra cuz' I live in MI and we don't get enough sun)

I take an adult multi, fish oil, and nascobal b-12 nose spray (once a week). The nose spray is by prescription and I'm not sure I love it--seems like it may irritate my sinuses sometimes. But, it is only once a week which is really nice.
