What is the procedure afterwards and how long does it hurt for?
When I first opened my eyes post op, what I remember anyway, it was really bright. You can expect some pain from the surgery and the air that will pumped in to do it. For me it settled in my left shoulder. I was in pain because I hadn't gotten pain meds yet. I didn't have the best time in recovery because of a mix up. I actually didn't get meds until I was in my room.
Discuss your pain management with your dr and anastilogist (sp) prior to your surgery. I remember waking up in recovery and then when I got into my room. There was a little discomfort, but not pain. As the meds wore off, there was some pain but the nurses were quick to get me refilled. Also ask for nausea meds as well.
Good luck to you
I remember trying to get up and walk because everyone on here said, "walk, walk, walk" My mother had to put me back in the bed and tell me to give it an hour. LOL!
I had a morphine drip but only used it once right when I got to my room, otherwise I had some mild pain/discomfort and was groggy and woozy but the pain wasn't the issue really. I mean there was some from the air but honestly it wasn't that bad. For just having had a major organ pulled from my body, I think I felt alright.
I remember people calling my name saying wake up, wake up and I just wanted to keep sleeping. I said I'm not going to school today Mom, let me sleep.
They asked if I had pain and to be honest I don't know if I did or not but said yes and they gave me a shot of morphine in my IV. I was able to get morphine every 6 hours and took it, I didn't want the pain to get ahead of me. That was only for the first 24 hours then went home with only liquid pain med and only took that at night. I was VERY lucky I had no gas pain at all. Everyone's different.

They didn't give me a morphine drip, so yes, I was in pain. Six hours after surgery I asked for something and they gave me some dilaudid. I had to learn to cough so fluid wouldn't build up in my lungs. That really hurt.
I have a high pain tolerance, gave birth to 2 children on only wimpered a little.
Everyone's different as previously suggested, ask before surgery. My pain only lasted 3 days post- op.
Good luck.
I woke up in recovery and freaked out a little. I was awake and coherent but my back was killing me. I mean killing me so bad that I knew I had to sit up to feel better. And the staff thought I was trying to get out of bed so they held me down! I kept saying " I just need to sit up". Finally they let me and instant relief.
I had just a little soreness. I took no narcs because I can't. I had the On Q ball for pain and it was lovely. I also had a NG tube, ugh. All in all it wasn't 1/2 as bad as I thought it was going to be. I also had NO gas pain at all.
