Carbonated drinks are a BIG reason why I had so many problems with my Lap Band. My over indulgence (Rt. 44 Diet Coke w/Vanilla was my drug of choice! which it would literally take me all day to finish!!) repeatedly caused bouts of esophogitis which necessitated my band being unfilled.

Eventually I got tired of the constant pain and weaned myself off of them. I did have one -- as a farewell celebration -- last Wed., the day before my sleeve surgery. I can finally say I'm prepared to live a life without any fizz. ;-)

I keep saying a sip. I didn't say chug a lug. Each individual will have to gage what their tolerance level is.

It all boils down to your stomach has finite room and to be successful in your post-gastric life is to not put in empty calories.

That said, as long as the wine has a 92 or better rating from Wine Spectator and not box wine then I think that is allowed. But no matter what it cannot be a Reisling, Liebfraumilch, or anything with the Muscat grape that is forboden.

    Good Luck

My literature states that it can not only expand your stomach, it causes inflammation. I too, enjoyed a diet soda now and then, especially when eating high fat, high carb meals. I guess since I never had a huge dependence on it, it isn't so bad, but I don't think knowing what I know now I will drink it anymore.

@lshepler. Thank you for reiterating my point and good for you for quitting. I just don't get the people that rationalize an occasional soda with everything that points too bad. How many rock bottoms does a person need?

    Booth,
I appreciate your candor. I feel like going through this process has already been life altering, and my reason for doing it was just that. I, personally, will do NOTHING to jeopardize any of it. I'm not saying it's all rainbows and butterflies, or that I'm not going to be temped by some of my favorite things, (which may be just as if not more harmful than soda is), I am a realist after all. I know there will be things that will call my name, loudly, Lisa, please eat me. It's times like that when I will reach out to all of you, here on the forums for support so that I'm not downing that mac n' cheese I love so much!

Why the issue with specific grapes or types of wines? We make our own wine and brew our own beer, so I'm curious. Also - on the subject of carbonation - I'm very fortunate - since we keg our own beer, my hubby can adjust the amount of carbonation, so that I can occasionally enjoy a small amount of beer with just enough carbonation to make it not flat. I don't drink soda anyway, so that is the only carbonation I ever really get.

It is apparent my attempt at humor and subtly saying that cheap white wine is excluded from our diet fell on "flat" ears ( pun intended).

My response to you is becoming redundant. We have a finite space in our our new stomachs and therefore should not be filled with empty calories like wine and beer (flat or not).

I watch those intervention shows on addicts and their justification for occasional usage is synonymous with what people are saying here about soda. It is not difficult at all to give up the bad foods, that is unless you are an addict, which is what got most of us here in the first place. Once people realize they have not ability to self control the faster they will reach their goals.

Good luck with your own beer and wine ( which is cool that your husband makes his own)

I've seen anything from 6mo to a year for the abstinence of all alcohol beverages. But once again, I read on this site where members have had a "sip" during a celebration.

This surgery for many will save, restore, revive the lives of many. It's about individual choices. Some will follow the book to the letter, others will find the "wiggle room" in the words.

As this is a fairly new protocol for the treatment of obesity, we will be the test group that the medical community will look upon. That's exciting. Our approaches on "working the sleeve" will be the bench mark for all that follow us. If you're a carbonated beverage, alcohol drinking, chocolate cake, fried food, big meal, junk food, orange juice addict (Whoosh - did I miss any ) ; each of us will either eliminate or modify those choices from our lives in order to "rock the sleeve"

I read a fantastic article in the Feb. 2011 issue of Reader's Digest called "The Bottom Line on Happiness". Number 3 on the list of tools is called "Avoid Just This Once". We all have a tendency to do the "just this once" thing, where we let our guard down in the face of some extenuating circumstance. The cost of doing something wrong, "just this once", always seems low. We get suckered in and allow our principles to be compromised, not realizing the long term effects of our spur of the moment decision to "just this once", whatever it is. According to the article, (and I agree) it's easier to hold to your bottom line 100% of the time than it is to hold them 98% of the time.
I know this is part of what got me into trouble with my weight in the first place and I am seeing it in very clear light for maybe the first time.
I only hope this helps some of us in our journey to become healthier, happier human beings! The best to you all!

I'm not usually a "Debbie Downer" type of person, but I feel this warrants sharing.

There are reports of WLS patients, happy with their new bodies and content to sip-sip-sip while other people eat who unwittingly transfer their food addictions into alcohol-addictions where they didn't previously drink at ALL.

One young lady I know of ended up dying from alcohol poisoning....she'd never had an alcoholic drink until AFTER she lost 125 lbs with WLS and started going out with her friends. She was 27 and a friend of a friend. Her loved ones were understandably stunned by this.

Just remember, addictive personalities is what got a lot of us where we started from. Please use extreme caution and ask those closest to you to step in if they see you crossing a line.

I think that was probably just a joke. My wife and I will sometimes kid
about eating something bad (which is always too much of something
good) when... The next hurricane comes...When I can get back to a certain
restaurant we have visited, New York, New Orleans, Vegas.... that kind
of thing. I avoided chocolate anything at Valentines day, by holding out
for a certain brand / type of truffle that is harder to find. I think that
takes the edge off some of the head food demands. I know for me if I get
into the 'never can have', 'last time in my life' head trip, it just tends
to me something more important than it otherwise would be.

THERE NEEDS TO BE A FONT FOR SARCASM !!!:

If someone is debating this much over sipping soda or wine then maybe they should just put down the bottle.
I am sure a little won't hurt, provided you are well past your surgery date and there is no chance of upsetting a new stomach,(we are not talking crack/meth here...okay). Make sure the wine has a good rating and the soda is flat
How many times have you heard that... coffee,redwine,eggs... were bad for you and then they were good and then bad...ect.ect.ect.

***weight loss ticker also includes 23 lbs lost before surgery***

I am still a member of the clean plate club only now my plate is much smaller
