I have a quick question...after the surgery, can I drink coffee?
i went thru classes at Kaiser and they told us no coffee. But the surgeon said one cup a day was ok.I ask why no coffee and he said it slows down the weight loss. So I am wondering myself how others have handled this cause i love my coffee. Oh and no sodas and i have been a diet pepsi fan for years. thats hard to give up but they say it cause a lot of discomfort from the carbonation.
My Surgeon said no Coffee for 1 month after surgery. Remember, there's a lot of acid in Coffee, and your stomach needs time to heal. I waited 2 months to have Coffee, myself. It can also cause acid reflux in your stomach. I've had more Coffee than usual lately, and have had to take Tums this week.
I've heard about avoiding caffeine all together, but it's hard to do that.
I did cut out soda completely, and have not had any for four months now. I had my VSG Surgery 3 months ago now.
Hello. At the classes I attended the nutritionist said only decaf. I know the lady sitting next to me was upset because she drinks coffee and smokes cigerettes...she came to the first class and never returned..post op requirements and wls in general has very specific guidelines
My dietician said that coffee contains too much acid, so avoid it for a month or two after surgery. I have been drinking tea ever since my surgery, have had perhaps two cups of coffee, but I find I don't enjoy it as much as I used to ... so why bother? I'm a tea drinker now! And the caffeine stimulates hunger, so I think that's why some advise against it. But tea also has caffeine...everything in moderation! I do try to only have it in the mornings which is my least hungry time of day, and avoid it in the afternoons/evenings which has traditionally been my killer hunger time of day. If I have some at night after dinner, I try to go for the decaf or herbal varieties.
I have been drinking 1 cup of weak coffee in the early morning, No sodas at all and everything is ok. I am not hungry in the early am so that is all I have till lunch so that is part of my liquid count! I hate water and not a big drinker so I count everything for my fluids. I do belive if I would drink more I would loose faster and more!
I have one cup of coffee during the mid morning and that's it. I use splenda or stevia and 0% milk.
I didn't have any coffee post op, until I started regular diet, so that was about a little over 2 months after surgery, almost 3 months.
I also cut sodas completely.
So yes, you can have coffee after surgery, just not immediately.
Lorrie, you're not eating anything until lunch? Just a suggestion: try to eat breakfast every day, something, even if just a cup of yogurt or piece of fruit. My nutritionist told me to eat something as soon as possible after waking up to get the metabolism going. I used to not get hungry at all until I had been awake (stumbling around, having my coffee) for 3 hours or more. She said that was because my metabolism was so slow. So she insists that her patients eat breakfast as early as possible after waking, and then eat 5 or 6 small meals throughout the day. Small frequent meals and daily exercise keep the metabolism going strong, and also keep us from having that cold feeling that so many of us experience. Now I only feel cold when it is around 10pm, and my metabolism is slowing down so I can sleep. So, as I said, just a suggestion for you, especially if you think you're not losing fast enough. Try it for a week and see if it makes a difference.
I usually have an egg scrambled with a tablespoon of milk and some grated cheddar cheese, or I have a packet of instant oatmeal to which I add 1/2 scoop of vanilla protein powder (some days I use water for my oatmeal, especially if I'm in a hotel; at home I use skim milk...about 1/2 cup). And some days I have a cup of yogurt. That's my breakfast, one of those three choices.
how do I cut out the caffeine for surgery? Actually I know, there is no painless way. A little less a day works as well as a little less candy. LOL. But a caffeine headache after surgery will not do me well. Dang, I guess I gotta get cutting. For me a 1/4 a time every few days helps. Right now just figuring how much I use is the trick!
