    Default Two quick questions

Hi everyone! Do any of you wear a medic alert bracelet? My surgeon and staff keep stressing the importance of wearing one. It should say "Gastric Sleeve - No Blind NG Tube." I really DON'T want to wear one of these b/c I don't want everyone to know I've had the sleeve. Although I DO understand the risk of stomach perforation in an emergency (car accident, trauma , etc).

Also, has anyone tried or use Genepro Protein Powder? Supposedly "medical grade" and flavorless (although the flavorless claim is debatable, according to online reviews). It's pricey and my funds are REALLY limited right now. I do love the idea of flavorless protein powder though, if anyone has any input on that.

    Thank you!!!

I don’t have a bracelet and it wasn’t suggested to me or my friend who had the procedure a year before. It makes sense. I would never wear one. You could probably have one made that says “no blind ng tube” without gastric sleeve on it if you want one. I have not tired that I do isopure

I would try the smallest container of any protein powder that you can find and not stock up. After the sleeve your taste buds can change drastically. Plus, everyone reacts differently to different stuff in various powders. For example, most people love the Premier brand but something in it makes me feel queasy when I drink them even though I love the taste. As for the alert bracelet, I get it but no I do not wear one and do not intend to.

Never heard of anyone having been sleeved wearing a medic alert bracelet......unless they had other issues that required it or course.
Sorry, can't help with the protein powder either. I have heard of it but never tried it. Not sure it is even available in NZ.
Christie's advise is good. Buy small quantities of anything new to try it first. You don't want to be stuck with something that you don't like or doesn't agree with you - especially if it is expensive.

    I don't have a medical alarm bracelet.
I see that a bit different I guess.
When I am really in desperate need of medical assistance, like in an emergency, I want the team to do whatever is necessary to save my life.
All else can be fixed afterwards.
So, if pumping my stomach empty is what I need, please insert the tube!

I have to stipulate I don't have severe allergies though, that is a completely different discussion.
In that case I would have that bracelet or whatever.

But beside that, it would take a considerable amount of force to poke a tube right through the stomach wall.
Those tubes are made of a soft(ish) material.
English is not my first language anymore, so I may and do make mistakes in my spelling, or say things oddly. Please ask me, if you want any clarifications.

I never heard of wearing a medic bracelet for the sleeve and probably wouldn't wear one if they had told me to. I have heard of Genepro and LOVE it! It is truly unflavored and if I could afford it, I would buy it. I tried the Isopure unflavored and it is NOT truly unflavored. I ordered 2 Genepro sample packets once. If you can get sample packets to try, that is your best bet so you can try it out.

I used to wear one (not for the sleeve, but for stents, blood thinners, diabetes, CABGx3, etc.) but it got to be so much stuff it wouldn't fit on the bracelet. None of my docs seemed to care either way and that includes cardiology. I guess if I'm out, I'll trust my husband to tell. No to that particular protein.

GenePro is expensive but it’s flavorless to me and I put it in pudding and soup (broth) early on. I’ve had it several different ways to get the protein. Don’t know a lot about other brands but Premier and GenePro is my 2 choices.

Don't have the medic alert bracelet. I probably should though because I am allergic to penicillin. I haven't heard of the protein shake that you mentioned; however, if you purchase something from Vitamin Shoppe and you don't like it, you can return it.

Thanks for all of the replies! My surgeon seems to be extremely cautious and conservative - which is fine with me. (I tend to be the same way in my practice). I'm not going to bother with the bracelet either.

Dutchie - Good point! I also would want the emergency crew to do whatever is necessary to save my life!

Ellis80 - I am definitely going to try to buy samples, most cost-effective way to try several products.

AnnieG - Wow you definitely have/had some health issues! Glad you're so much healthier post-sleeve.

Truss - Haven't tried premier yet, but it seems like most people love it and tolerate well (except Christie 13!)

Kenson - I did NOT know the Vitamin Shoppe took returns. I get coupons from them periodically as well. That's awesome!

I purchased Isopure at Vitamin Shoppe because everyone said it was good. I hated it! They took it back. They have a sign posted that they will take used protein shakes and powders back if you are not satisfied.

I also despised Isopure. Wretched stuff. Yet some people adore it. Weird.

My go-to shake was and always has been (am having one right now for breakfast, five years post-op) GNC Lean Shake 25 Swiss Chocolate. It has 25 grams of protein and 170 calories.

In a pinch I'll use Premier Protein Chocolate shakes (30 grams of protein at 160 calories), but to me it doesn't taste nearly as good as the GNC shakes.

Our shake preferences are so individualized!
