    Default Clarification

Went w/hubby today to his first surgeon's visit. I had been under the impression that I could NEVER have NSAIDs again (my dr is in same practice ). Hubby's doc said it is ok in moderation after stomach has healed. Good to know. I hate taking Tylenol.

Ibuprophen is better at taking the pain of arthritis, or anything, away.

I too was told no more NSAIDs ever again. That said, I was just prescribed NSAIDs in the form of eye drops. I explained being sleeved to my eye doctor and he said it would be a very low dosage. I happen to be going to see my bariatrics surgeon on Monday and will bring the drops I haven't started to use yet. I wanted to get his opinion first.

I take 4 ibuprophen every single night. I thought it wasn't supposed to be taken for awhile before, and after, surgery.

Yeah we were told the same thing... but then the doctor himself told my husband its ok, just keep it in moderation! I also hate Tylenol. Does absolutely nothing for me, and I seriously think my headaches laugh at it!

I was told not until the stomach is healed. I do take occasionally when I really need something stronger. However, because it is so rare I only need one to do the job where in the past I did take 4!

Hummer, no need to apologize, NSAIDS are non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. So ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin, Motrin... ect... they tend to bug stomachs in general, and we now have this tiny stomach, that the doctor's worry about ulcers.

NSAIDs were a big topic of discussion with my surgeon's patients pre-op. Like most of your surgeons, he said, "No more daily NSAIDs. But you can take them occasionally for injuries."

BTW, it doesn't matter if you take NSAIDs orally or in IVs or rectally or even rubbed as an ointment on your skin. Once NSAIDs get into our bodies, the negative effects they have on our tummies is the same. You can google that. A good reference is:

My doctor told me no NSAIDS every again. Regular Tylenol does nothing for me and the higher dosage makes me nausea.

I have both Rheumatoid and Osteo-Arthritis (I'm 39) and my surgeon consulted with my rheumatologist because the surgeon said no more NSAID's were allowed after surgery due to an increased risk of ulcers at the incision line even once your tummy is healed, it will still be a high risk. I take Tylenol with codeine daily, my shot of Enbrel weekly, and when my RA flares up my rheumatologist will call in a prescription for low dose prednisone to take short term.
